are 144hz monitors better for racing & FPS games compared to 60hz? does it help to reduce eye strains?

read some opinions elsewhere some don't see any difference while others alot

also 144hz caused more eye strains for some due to pwm used in 144hz monitors?

It's arguably more useful for fps.

It basically refreshes the screen more often. From 60 pics to 144 pics per second which translates to "smoother" animations and more accurate position placements for fps.

Reduce eye strain? Just stop gaming every hour or 2 and rest for 15 mins lol

Agreed. If you have the money to spend and want to feel the buttery smoothness, go for 144hz. Otherwise, it isn’t exactly practical.

Can difference between the 2 frequencies be seen?

Definitely. Using 60hz looks choppy after u try 144hz.

Higher refresh rate also reduce input lag as well.

I currently using 240hz as the games I play always goes above 240 fps, so why not have a display that can display 240 fps to my eye. Hehe

But once u start using 144hz, u can't game on 60hz cuz u will notice how come the image isn't that smooth when u swipe your mouse on a fps game.

60Hz to 144Hz will be much smoother when gaming and just using windows, but if you have a crappy monitor with poor response time and bad ghosting issue you wont get the best of 144Hz.

It's not really worth buying 144hz unless you play FPS games where you can see the biggest difference

Even for fps, it's not that worthwhile unless you're super invested in climbing ladder or wanna go pro where every single positional update matters.

Many thanks to all inputs! I see there are 2 camps :)

I been using Samsung TV for gaming (FHD @ 60hz) lately. Compared to Dell 2715h (FHD @ 60hz) , TV seems to put more strain on eyes. (As in gets tired more quickly)

I have no doubt that 144hz will look more smoother. But more hoping to reduce eye strain & improve input lag / reaction time (especially racing where a split sec late/early on tight hairpin means a lot of differences). I seen 60hz vs 144hz racing comparison on youtube, external objects seems to fly pass slower @ 144hz and that may help on reaction time. I guess that will apply to FPS games as well.

Next question, 27" vs 32" ~ is 32" too big for gaming?

Oh another question … can I run higher fps on 60hz monitor/TV with vsync on?
On division 2, when I turn on vsync … it always locked at 60hz even when my GPU Can render faster

then turn vsync off

You will only get 60fps on 60Hz monitor due to the limit of the monitor even tho you can run higher fps, anything fps above 60 will be wasted.

I used 27" and 32" monitors for gaming, sitting about 80cm away from screen. I find 32" to be just nice for 1440p although 90-100cm away would be more ideal. When focusing on the game, your eye retina will cover smaller area and mostly focus on middle part (where the action is). Thus, for things like HUD or mini maps at corner, you may tend to find urself shifting ur eyes to the corners a bit once in a while.

But for 27" 1440p, it is quite painful to look at normal text coz its quite small. 32" 1440p is just nice at a far distance.

Been using 27in 1440P and i have to agree, 32in 1440p is the sweet spot for many things.

so wrong.

60hz to 144hz not worthwhile unless wanna go pro? U dont have to play pro to wanna have smooth image and reduce choppiness when u play a fps game or even just on desktop with your different mouse movements.

let me guess,

1) u didnt use 144hz before
2) clearly are not a fps gamer, or if u are, u are a very casual gamer and probably not good at it :s12:
3) u turning old that your eyes cant see a difference

there are defintely 2 camps

after gaming be it competitively or casually for fun, those that do not bother about going 144hz or higher are generally "noobs" in the games that i play. no offence haha. but for FPS, refresh rate clearly is very important not only for people who are going pro but for just individual satisfaction.

Try it first and see for your own.

going to 144hz is not only about a competitive advantage.

Even for normal desktop usage, be it browsing, moving up your web page up and down has smoother feel and look since more frames are shown on screen. 60hz at this age, is really just for office use or someone who doesnt game at all. For a home entertainment system, with how good cpu processors and graphic cards are, why bottleneck your system with a 60hz display showing out 60 frames only? Games in this generation hardware evolution clearly can show more than 60 frames in most games.

its like people spending money on multi core processors like ryzen and intel i7 etc, fast SSDs and modern graphic cards, but end up the display where you are show casing what your hardware is, is a slow choppy 60hz monitor. Spend so much for your hardware and the final user experience on a display is choppy. O_O

Of course those who are using a 60hz monitor up till today will argue that 60hz is fine, of course its fine because you didnt experience 144hz yet. Some dont wanna get 144hz because..... .... they wanna save money.

In regards to eye strain, get those 144hz monitors that is Flicker free or have low blue light emissions.

curious, for 144Hz gaming we require the system to be able to render atleast 144Fps to see the full 144Hz right?

if I get 144hz monitor but system can only max at 100FPS is still a loss right?

yes, ur fps must reach 144 to take full advantage of the 144hz
if u cant afford good spec, there is no reason to go 144hz
the diff in money better off upgrading other aspects of the com

Yup, which is why when we are building a rig, we must first decide what resolution and refresh rate we plan to play on and adjust the budget accordingly. No point spending all the money to build a powerful gaming rig with a normal 1080p 60hz monitor or spending the money to get a 1440p 165hz monitor but a rig which is not strong enough to support the monitor.
