the way 听雷 works is so vague and random. how did 三叔 listen and interpret its meaning? i get it that the pillars vibrate when there is thunderstorm. but then 三叔 record the thunder and suddenly know its meaning? did he interpret it from the pillars, or is there something more to it?

According to the novel, when one listen to the thunder, he will enter into some kind of dream state and in the dream state, he will be able to know what he want to know

By right 三叔 want 吴邪 to listen to the thunder and let the thunder cure his illness.
However, 吴邪 don't know about this and all he want to know from 听雷 is to find out his 三叔 whereabout.
This is why 吴邪's illness was not totally cure, only relieve of the symptom and still need modern medical to continue curing it (has to wait for next novel then will know 吴邪 got recover fully boh)

the show inside say the erjin work for 20 years, take care wuxie since young (maybe from 10-14 yr), then means wuxie is only 34 yo in the show now.
but remember some guy say this story line wuxie should be 40-50yo liao.

also if erjin work and join after 3uncle go missing searching for thundercity, then how the earlier wuxie join 3uncle in the first part to find the tomb where he eat the qilin stone.

how much diffferent is book vs show sia.
