Hiding the SSID has little to no security benefits and can cause connectivity issues with clients. A sniffer can easily uncover hidden SSIDs.

You're better off using WPA2 or even WPA3 with a good long PSK (Upper+lower letter, number, symbols, at least 12 char).

Noted. Thanks!

WPA3 is probably too ahead of the curve now that not many devices supports it.

Some routers seem to support WPA2 PSK / WPA3 SAE mixed mode. That may be a compromise.

As for password, interestingly some companies (including the one I am working for) and even FBI already change the recommendation to long passphrase with length like 12- 15.

Anyone know I could recognize cat5e if I unscrew the phone line faceplate in my room? Like to see if there is a cat 5e inside as suggested by someone else earlier.

the line will have at least 4 pairs of wire (total 8 wires)

Sorry can ELI5? So I open up the faceplate and if there is cat5e, cat5e is exposed cable? Then what do I do next? Change the faceplate? Is this something that I can do simply myself? I'm not familiar with electrical stuff.

You probably don't want to be touching anything there, but if you're still keen on DIY, I suggest you research more about it before commiting, there's plenty of resources online.

yep! they sell the faceplates in provision shops (at least in bedok central for $7), the self punching type so you dont need to buy a punchdown tool! many youtube videos on how to do. almost no risk since the cables dont carry live current

but its better to get some rj45 crimpers, keystones and wire tester if possible (not impossible to do without). i got all of them for $15 on taobao

You're in Bedok too? :s13:

Anyway, since you have to buy keystone jacks, try Sim Lim Tower for them all - faceplates and RJ45 keystones. The cheap keystone punch down tool is less than a dollar if you don't mind punching down one at a time - it's only 8 per keystone, pretty quick imo.

Thanks! This was helpful. Yeah I agree, I don't think I should DIY when i don't know anything. I did ask the condo management about all these things and they have no idea either. Haiz.

I saw you have a few threads going about cabling and internet speed for zoom etc.

Why not try asking your friends around whether they have spare mesh routers to loan you for testing...
As what xiaofan mentioned, if you can get hold of TP-Link M9 Plus mesh (you need a pair to setup) that will be good. That’s the easiest and fastest way to troubleshoot.... please don’t dismiss mesh system right away.

I've decided for now to go with the super long Ethernet cable.

I'm not sure about mesh yet. It's really costly at the moment (I'm with M1) and the router is really too far from the room so that's why I'm hesitant but it's still within consideration if the long cable doesn't work.

Long Ethernet cable will work.... it’s just a hassle to lay twice every week for 2 hours usage and then roll back the cable but please make sure it don’t get into people’s way otherwise someone might trip over. Very dangerous especially for old folks at home, you can’t afford the slightest mistake.
