Need advice from you guys if I can upgrade my storage size of of 6TB running at RAID 5 with 4x2TB HDD on the DS920+?

Can it be replaced with HDD by HDD by letting the RAID rebuild thru inserting a larger cap HDD in slot by slot?

You can replace with bigger HDD. Unlike SHR capable of supporting different capacity, the RAID 5 rebuilt will only use the new HDD capacity based on the smallest HDDs. This mean you won't be able to use then new addition HDD capacity until you do a complete reconfiguration or new installation.

Quick update for those always interested in HDD health between brands.

2 of my Ironwolf Pro 10TB drives started to develop bad sectors, some info on it

Drive 1
Temperature: 37 Deg C
Power on Time: 24905 hours
Bad Sector count: started at 500 last month increase to 600
Still within warranty period * likely will RMA at some point.

Drive 2
Temperature: 39 Deg C
Power on Time: 11240 hours
Bad Sector count: Stable at 8
Still within warranty period

Tbh I dun think this says much except drives so develop bad sectors at times, have several more similar drives with the around the same run time between the two which are running fine. Hope this helps in making your HDD decisions.

thank you for sharing, will skip this junk

For those who hook up to UPS, make sure you do a battery check frequently after 2 years of usage. The battery lifespan would have been reduced, and may not sustain power for long during a power failure.

And related to the above, some batteries may bloat. Best to change out the battery after 2 years if you know how to or buy a new one altogether. Batteries are a source of ups fire.

Buy those UPS which can change its battery one.

So am I able to scale up from my current RAID 5 by doing drive by drive replacement and rebuilding?

(4)(4)(4)(4) "12TB" -> (10)(10)(10)(10) "30TB"

Quickly RMA both and change.

WD Black 6TB - 15,306hrs (Operating about 38-50degC)
WD Black 4TB - 26,803hrs (Operating about 37degC)

Both no bad sector.

So what would be the way to go?

Buy cheaper harddisk and hope for the best?

Buy more expensive harddisk which has better chance to last longer without problem?

So far, all the WD Blacks that I bought have proven to be good. Seagate gave me the worst experience. The previous batch of Seagate I bought ALL RMA-ed. The only lucky thing is that I just need to drop it off in Changi South, which is less than 10mins drive from my place.

Does any of you experience disconnection to the drives map on the Synology NAS every about 30mins?

Whenever this happens, I will have to reboot the NAS to get it to connect back. I have assigned a static IP to the NAS from my router, so the IP doesn't change.

Interestingly, I can still login to admin page for the Synology NAS via browser but I cannot access the "Shared Drives".

Actually I shared my experienced to kinda say that all harddisk will develop issues regardless of brand but I should add some context. My current setup is a 16 bay Synology with 15x Seagate Ironwolf Pro and 1 x Seagate Exos for backup.

I've tried WD Reds previously and both develop I/O errors after awhile (Bad sectors are not as bad as I/O errors in my view) so have shunned from WD. But Hitachi drives I've used (x2) were problem free but low capacity drives 4TB drives.

In total of running various setups I probably gone thru about 35 - 40 Seagate drives ranging from 4TB/6TB to 10TB/16TB. So far with Seagate a handful will developed bad sectors.

Generally the 4TB Seagate's (Seagate NAS model) are okay though, at one point I had 10 x 4TB Seagate NAS running for about 4 -5 years and only 1 developed a bad sector issue in the late stages before I migrated the volume. They now renamed the NAS model to Ironwolf.

I typically go for the NAS recommended drives which for WD was the WD red hence didn't consider the WD blacks.

Never had that issue, does your NAS hibernate the drives/connections after awhile?

Yes. The NAS will power off after a period of idle but I get the disconnection even when I was copying files over to the NAS.
.
This is abnormal, something is wrong. Maybe check Firewall settings.

Seems it does happen for some Synology owners but no one has manage to find the root cause.

I would maybe try the simple stuff change the network cable from the NAS to the router, then reset the router and all just to see if it helps. Then if not go into the in depth stuff and trying out solutions others have on the community site, you can raise a tix with the Synology team as well they respond quite quick from my experience.

My Synology DS416 got 2 x 2TB running SHR. I added 2 x 6TB. It is "Expanding". From my estimate, it will probably take about 2-3 days to complete.

If I know that it will take that long, I would have just copy out the 2TB data and then just create SHR fresh.

My NAS is DS416.

Spec link :

https://global.download.synology.co...X20D*MTYwODc3MDUxNy4xMi4xLjE2MDg3NzA3MjIuNTM.

I saw this under Technical Specifications :

Maximum internal raw capacity 32 TB (8 TB HDD x 4) (The actual capacity will differ according to volume types)

Question : Does this mean that the max I can put in this NAS is 8TB x 4?

Storage management Maximum single volume size: 16TB, Maximum internal volume: 256, Maximum iSCSI Target: 10, Maximum iSCSI LUN: 10

Question : Does this mean that the maximum SHR Storage pool size that I can go is 16TB?
