Off topic, during the 2004 Aceh tsunami, healthcare workers who volunteered to help out were given unrecorded leave. Meaning fully paid but on leave for unknown length of time and not annual leave. Obviously the govt approved. So it so possible in this case for the armed forces in European countries or even USA to have such schemes so that soldiers can fight, be paid and the govt can say they were on leave and on their own time.

All the haters of the west seem to either skip history channels or forgotten that this ish nothing new. In WW2 already happened before.
