The biggest contributor to the China-TW tension is not the solution (or the lack of it) per se. It's the lack of trust - mainly on TW's side: TW doesn't believe that China will seriously allow TW to remain completely self-ruled (ie status quo) under China's proposed '1 country 2 system' model.

b4 hk, got chance,
now, insert da sha pic.......
I haven't been to HK for years (last I was there with my family was when they had this 'occupy central' movement, caused quite some inconvenient to tourist like us..).

But is HK really worse off than it was before the handover? If it were that bad, why had (the now late) celebrity writer Ni Kuan, a vocal critic against CCP, chosen to come back to live in HK 16 years ago, and had remained there until his passing (in Jul this year)? And he being such a vocal critic against CCP, had anything happened to him since his return to HK?

The 'extradition bill'? Because they suspected that the bill is meant to allow China to suka suka extradite dissentients back to China mainland for trial. But I thought they said China had already been doing that, albeit 'secretly'? I feel that the trigger of HK's unrest is also the lack of trust, the suspicions that China is out to catch the pro-democracy activist..

Which is unsurprising anyway, I mean, which country will allow its own people to rebel against its govt?

they were NOT to mess around in hk governance til 2047. too impatient to wait until then. rightfully or wrongfully TW dun believe anything they say about 1C2S. especially the warwolfing during their last election actually gave english veggie the win. pooh dunno how to play the long game juz like the current MIW..........

Which goes back to my earlier question: how much worse off is HK now than it was before the handover?

BTW I mentioned the 'occupy central' movement just now, back then as a tourist, we were inconvenient by the 'occupy central' protestors (some part of HK we wanted to visit was inaccessible because of the protest), and back then I was thinking, had it happened in SG, they'll sure be arrested by our police liao, doubt our govt will allow them to hold such protest for so long..
