My contract is also ending in 2 months with M1. For me, it's either stay with M1 or change to Viewquest. My thinking is if you want singteltv or startup TV than you take their Internet.

M1 offering cheap and reliable Internet. I see more complaints about other ISPs than M1. Last month they gave me promo 2gbps with router, but I do not need 2gbps. Hopefully, by Christmas, they can have good recon promo for 1gbps . I would probably need to change to a WiFi 6 router
M1 should be able to offer a good promo, just need to call them.

Hi all & @xiaofan,

So consensus seems to be...

Stay with M1
- Call M1 cust service & negotiate for new router
- Get 3 months free (Code: RE13MTH)
- Routers: Asus RT-AX82U, Asus GT-AX6000, Asus RT-AX55

@xiaofan

Just checked after logging into M1's dashboard.

These are my routers options for recontracting my 1Gbps plan...

Should I go for free Asus RT-AX55?

Or just pay $13/mth * 24 mths(?) = $312 (right?) for Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000?

And what about Asus RT-AX88U? Which is better as compared to the GT-AX6000?

Go and get the GT-AX6000. It is much much better than the free RT-AX55 or TP-Link Archer AX72. M1 price is very very good.

In fact it is listed by Dongknows to be the overall best consumer AX router.

RT-AX88U is not a bad AX router but there is no reason to go for it compared to GT-AX6000 (faster CPU and 2.5G LAN port), unless you absolutely need that 8 LAN ports.

Hi all,

So I've been on M1's Fibre 1Gbps plan ($39.90 / month) for a long time and contract will be up next month...

I'm wondering if I should jump to Starhub or stick with M1 (no incentive for re-contracting since there's no new router right?)...?

My considerations...

=> Want a new Wifi6 router just to “future proof” (Been using Asus old RT-AC1200G+ router) - Can either buy retail or get from ISP

=> Don’t want to pay more than $50/mth (ideally stay at $39.90 or less per month)

=> Do I actually need 1Gbps or 500Mbps would suffice? Mainly wife & I use. When would one need 1Gbps? I can always upgrade from 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps right? Based on this thread => https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/threads/singapore-isp-comparisons.6665380/, I believe 500Mbps would be enough

Thanks all!
Change to SingTel $58 /mth can change to wifi 6

Thanks @xiaofan... think I'll go for the GT-AX6000 then

So the ONLY reason to go for RT-AX88U is if I need lots of LAN ports then

Not so sure which plan you are referring to.

Singtel plans are like the following, there is no S$58 plan.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/fibre-broadband-plans
And it is not recommended for new users to go with Singtel due to the use of ONR, unless you want to pay for the more expensive 1+1 Gamer Plan.

Honestly you can get the best router and get the best speed test result but in the real internet world you are not faster than any other user because your download and upload speed are controlled. If just by buying a better router can give you a faster speed then everyone of us will be buying the best router. Do google what is internet traffic shaping?

You are mixing up things.

You can go with 500Mbps plan and yet buy a good wireless router. The selection of a good wireless router here has nothing to do with the speed of external website or the speedtest results.

The issue here is more about wireless coverage and potentially local home network speed (if you have things like NAS).

My recommendation is always to go with the good router within your budget. Selection of router has nothing to do with 500Mbps or 1Gbps plan. It also has nothing to do with the external website you like to go. You have no control of that. But at least you control your local home network first.

For your local home network the ASUS AX55 at a good location will be able to do the job. At the end of the day it is where you put the router because user's home is not so big. There are so many users in the world that is using basic wifi 6 router without any wifi coverage issue as long as their home is small and the router at the right location,

If it helps, I live in a standard 104 sqm 4 Room HDB flat.

My ONT, Huawei modem & router are all in the living room and I want to ensure I’ve got strong WIFI connection from one of my rooms which is the home study

New build BTO with LAN ports or old HDB with brick walls?

If new BTO, just get more routers and put them into AP mode if you find wireless to be lacking. Make good use of the LAN ports you paid for in your rooms.

The solution to weak wifi signal is more APs (access points).

Old HDB with brick walls unfortunately…

Well can you share with me what is your wifi speed test result like DL & UL and Ping? You can move your router to a higher position to test. I am quite sure the ASUS AX55 can do the job. I think should be able to get at least 100 to 200 mbps download speed.
