Singapore is mainly a transhipment port
even if kra canal is built , cannot take over this function

commercial ships still need a place to transfer cargo

Thailand's Kra Isthmus Canal - will it be a reality?

The canal would take an estimated ten years to complete at a cost of US$28 billion.

Thailand would benefit from toll collection, port fees and a range of developments surrounding the canal.
If the Kra Canal is built, it will cut the journey between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea by up to 1,200 km

Shipping and logistics companies would definitely welcome the lowered costs of moving goods between East Asia and Europe. A shorter trip without going through the Straits of Malacca would also reduce the risk of running into pirates.

On 15 May 2015, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the China-Thailand Kra Infrastructure Investment and Development company (中泰克拉基础设施投资开发有限公司) in Guangzhou to advance the Kra canal project. On 19 May 2015 the Thai government denied reports that an agreement had been signed with China to construct the canal.
Caina failing la and who want kana caina debt trap? If taikok cut into half lata tio southern military revolution how? Onli toopid will do

Whole country will bankrupt before the canal done. And then internal unrest and possibly civil war.

Once done will need to charge high high to recoup money spent. And then ships will run away.

I think SInkipoo does collect fees from vessels that are anchored at our anchorage. Take it as a sort of protection fee, once vessels out from achorage, however..

As others pointed out, it does not save a lot of time if the canal is really built. The ships need to be lifted to a certain height above sea level by locks when transversing across the canal. Its not like Suez canal whereby the ships can just travel across.

Thailand won't move forward cos it will split the country. Southern Thailand which is predominantly muslim will have greater reason to separate from thailand.
this is also one of the reasons y Malaysia need to cosy up and cooperate with China, let them build ports near Malacca, etc.

China are seeking to gain better control on their shipping lanes through all possibilities, above are just some. Others include investing heavily on myanmar politics and working closely with Indonesia.

2 strategic points for China shipping route, andaman islands which control the entry into straits of malacca and south of Indonesia. China will do whatever they need to ensure their shipping lanes are secured. This is also the reason y there is a belt and road initiative to diversify from over dependence on shipping.

SG is just a small part in this larger strategic chess game.

my 2 cents nia.

Singapore is still a major transshipment hub... ships still need to call at our port to unload and reload... bypassing Singapore only serves one part of the shipping industry...
