While preparing to land, will you based on the clearance to land from the control tower staff or based on your judgement?

Or both?

You need clearance from ATC to land, but if you spot something on the runway of course get out of there immediately

Yes I know pilot required clearance from ATC to land

But it will be disaster like the recent JAL crash where they claim they are given the clearance to land

It was dark, can't see, i think if it was daytime, the pilot could have spotted something on the runway and go around..

True, but when ATC give you clearance to land, you assume that the runway is clear.

I'm guessing its a lesson learnt now.

What claim?

Either they receive or didnt receive.

Everything is recorded so we will know what happened in due course.

Actually if landing time pilot notice got obstruction or issues should touch and go or flyby continue circuit. Lol

And the big question, why was there a coast guard plane in the runway?

Are they supposed to be there?

if control tower given the green light.

then still plane crash on the run way = pilot or plane problem or both.

if the approach the landing run away the ATC will also know and will tell them to stop, all these converstions are recorded.

I'm not a pilot but from what I've seen/watched online, both.

Primarily based on your clearance to land but you should obviously still open your eyes to see whether there is an obstruction on the runway (limited at night and in low visibility conditions), and listen in to the communication of other planes on the ground talking to ATC (air traffic control). All planes are on the same radio channel when approaching an airport.

I've watched a YouTube video of an incident where a landing pilot heard the conversation of a taxiing plane with ATC at a small US airport. The taxiing plane was confused, not sure which taxiway he was at or where he should go! The landing pilot refused to land even though ATC cleared him to land because he was concerned that the other plane may accidentally encroach onto the runway. I think he did a "go around" and landed after the confusion was cleared up.

Better safe than sorry!

No one says that pilots must die die land if ATC gives clearance. Same as if traffic green light but you see someone in the middle of the road you will stop or take some evasive action
