Which are the reliable shops to buy cameras and lens at? Shops with good salespeople who can advise you which camera to get.

My experience with D90 was with a Harvey Norman salesguy who gave me good advice. He spent about an hour explaining to me patiently the difference between DX and FF and why I should get a DX and not a FF, and why I should get a D90 then.

Is there a store where someone can offer such good and professional sales service?
I bought my last camera + lenses from SLR Revolution. Did not have good experience with Cathay during my earlier years.

I am using Nikon D750 and brought it with me few times for travelling, mainly birding.

You can find all photography information at Clubsnap https://clubsnap.com/ but too bad this site is mostly defunct nowadays, except for buy sell.

10-20 years back, the most reliable shops are, (in no order of merit) TK Photo (Funan), Cathay (Peninsular), Alan Photo (Funan, SLS), MS Colour (AMK), trustworthiness depending on the sales person.
All those shops you mentioned are still alive and well.

Will be travelling to Europe. My last DSLR camera was Nikon D90 which I bought in 2008 and is still working well.

I have lent it to a family member and am thinking of getting a new one. It’s quite heavy in any case and I know technology has improved by many moons and stars, so would like to get a new one.

Any photographer hobbyist who’s able to make recommendations? Thinking of getting back Nikon for the familiarity.

iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best. Else, can visit SLR Revolution. Cool people and good experience.

John 3:16 had quite a reputation too but I believe they no longer have any physical storefront.

Early days still got go meetups and make friends, mods sometimes will attend. Genuine sharing and also poisoning sessions.

Yes, there are many other reliable shops too that are too many to list here. Most are in decline because people have mostly switched to handphones with superb cameras. Even Fee Fee where I used to develop and print black and white film photos is still around.

certainly something farther and less conspicious helps. but if it is a spontaneous shot, and the person see you taking photo, do u think they will react differently to different types of camera? maybe i am asking a very superficial question, but do you think the camera that you use, pose an image of how people being taken photo of, views you and react to you (hopefully not in a hostile, suspicious or negative manner)?

let's say versus a dslr/mirrorless or a handphone, u use the following...

1. fuji x100vi in silver
2. nikon zfc with silver top
3. leica
4. hasselblad
5. lomo

of cos all these are hypothesized. it will be hard to have someone using all or most of the above to tell if there is a difference.

Smartphones are ubiquitous, my guess is people will react less aggressively / defensively than a purpose driven dedicated camera.

Urban citified folks will be more defensive than 3rd world country / rural folks, much easier to get spontaneous close up pictures without getting into a potential testy argument.

"Visual impact" of homeless or vulnerable / less privileged / unhoused / in some kind of crisis are higher but of course the ethical lines become blurred.

when i last bought camera, which was many years ago, the recommendation was to ask for e-quote before going down, rationale being the e-quote was handled by the boss. if u go down to talk to salesperson, he/she will charge you higher price. not sure if this is still the case now

the "usual suspects" to ask for quotes are
- alan photo
- cathay photo
- ms color
- slr revolution
- tk foto

personally will do own research, sometimes the "fear" is that salesperson will sell you the camera that they have trouble selling

street photography, the key is to be discreet

even when using handphone, if you are holding it with 2 hands in front of you, like holding a camera, it will likely result in negative reaction

there are many techniques/tools to get candid and natural street photos

i also have a old Nikon 7000, never use for many years and in my recent Jaoan trip I take out and use still in good condition, i would have thought the len will have problem but suprising is clean.

it is heavy to carry that for my 10 days japan trip but is worth it because I know it can capture some nice picture beyond handphone camera.

Just realised Fee Fee Photo has a very long history in Singapore.
"With the return of peace to Singapore, Chu Sui Mang rebuilt his business at Fee Fee. Today, his daughters continue to run Fee Fee House of Photographics on a modest scale in Hong Lim Complex.44 It is one of the few remaining photo businesses established locally prewar, which survived the Japanese Occupation and advances in photography."

If you have not invested heavily in lenses, try going for a mirrorless, much more compact.

I was on FF canon dslr, couldn't stand the weight, so switched to Fuji XF.

Now getting old already, eyesight quite bad, squinting into tiny aps-c viewfinder is very tiring, so probably going back to mirrorless FF again. Get my kids to share camera load.

clubsnap still alive la. the forums at least xD.

My canon body 1100D.. need to change alr.. bought in 2012. xD

Whats the next best step up? Looking at lower-mid range. no need mid-upper

For lenses... I have

1) 18-135mm kit lens
2) 10-22mm UWA
3) 70-300mm
4) 50mm prime (waste of money.. zoom too far. 35mm prime better)

How about xiaomi 14 ultra? It have a 1 inch sensor with Leica lens and Leica color. See this thread for the beautiful photos taken by the phone camera.

If you still insist on a camera then you could also consider the Leica q3 if you are loaded. It's a full frame small compact camera with a fixed 28mm lens which you could digitally cropped into 35mm,50mm, 70 mm and 90mm format if you so wish.
