    • ASUS RT-AX3000P (worth $259)
    • Or get $1.09/mth off when you upgrade to any Wifi Mesh, Gaming or Performance router.
  • Note: Final discounts for router, where applicable, will be calculated at checkout. While stocks last.

Port 2 of the ont will be activated, providing 2x 1gbps network.
Sorry if this is a very noob question. How to connect the two ports from the ONT to router? My current router (Asus AX3000) only has one WAN port. Do I have to buy a new router to get 2Gbps, and if yes, which router is recommended?

My M1 plan is ending month end. Anyone managed to get better offer from M1 other than the $39 recontract plan? Their "customised" offer in app is basically the same as the $39 for current promotion.

M1 internet is reasonably good compared to viewqwest and myrepublic which both of which I left in the recent years. They are not the best for China connectivity but decent enough for streaming site and most streaming site do have CDN so you may not have to stream from china.
If you can provide sites that you frequently use, all the M1 user here can help you test too.

Wifi performance is dependant on your wifi access point and where you place them. if you asking about the included wifi router, I cannot comment much since i gave up on bundled router over 10 years ago because of how flaky they are.

For ax3000, you can't input 2 ports into the router. The 2 gbps plan is suitable for 2 different routers. 1 router to each port.

If you want to combine 2 ports to 1 router, you might need to consider higher spec router such Asus ax6000 or equivalent router from other brands. It is using dual wan load balancing method.

Am due to renew my M1 1GB plan. Comes with ASUS RT-AX3000P (worth $259)

Currently i m using RT AX-88U(living room) as the main router with RT AX-55(son's bedroom) as the mesh router. I supposed RT AX3000P is a better router than AX-55.

Option 1: If I switch out the AX55 to AX3000P, just switch out right and it will auto connect to the new router?

Option 2: put router AX3000P into my MBR as another mess? Also just plug and play?

Thanks

Option 1 and Option 2 will both work, but no such thing as plug and play. You have to set up AImesh by yourself. It is not difficult at all and it is the same as last time you set up your RT-AX55 as the AImesh node.

Your existing M1 plan is 1Gbps?

The S$39 per month recontract offer is for 2Gbps plan (dual 1Gbps plan).

Well, you can consider using asus load balancing feature and aimesh to cover the whole house.

Indeed, if upgrading to the new 2Gbps offer at S$39 per month, it is possible to use Dual WAN load balancing to get higher speed than 1Gbps.

There are two ways to use the M1 2Gbps plan.

1) Using it as dual 1Gbps plan, this is the recommended way by M1.
Two seperate networks, with two dynamic public IPv4 address.

Personally I do not recommend to directly connnect your gaming PC or gaming console to the internet, it is better to go through a router (firewall). So you need two routers in this case.

2) Using a router with Dual WAN Load Balancing capability.
M1 GPON ONT Port 1/Port 2 --> router WAN + secondary WAN

Better ones -- Mini PC running pfSense/OPNsense/OpenWRT/etc.
Consumer routers -- Asus, Xiaomi, TP-Link, etc. It is good to have 2.5G LAN port in this case.

Asus Dual WAN load balancing,
https://www.asus.com/sg/support/faq/1011719/

3) For Asus RT-AX88U, it does not have 2.5G LAN ports, but it has many LAN ports and support LAN Aggregation. So it is still possible to achieve > 1Gbps internet speeed on the LAN side if you have NAS or PC with dual gigabit network adapters. It is also possible to achieve > 1Gbps wireless speed with good WiFi 6 client (with 160MHz channel bandwidth).

@xiaofan can help elaborate on this? for this use case, where does the ont port 1 and ont port 2 connected to?

this approach seems to expand speed between router to nas from 1 gbps to link aggregated of 2gbps.

ONT Port 1 to RT-AX88U WAN port.
ONT Port 2 to RT-AX88U secondary WAN port.

You can specify the secondary WAN port in Asus router GUI, say using LAN port 3.

thanks, let me check it out on my ax88 router later.

previously i seemed to notice failover and load balance features of dual wan only.

are we enabling dual wan or wan aggregation here?

wan aggregation does not seems to be possible right ?as m1 ont does not support LACP-IEEE 802.3ad standard
