Just sharing another incident involving my Singtel line that I believe everyone should take caution on when travelling.

Recently I travelled to Taiwan. So just like everyone else, I've purchased a separate data-only travel eSIM plan for my travel mobile data needs. I don't intend to have any data roaming on my Singtel line (for obvious reasons).

On departure day, I activated my travel esim beforehand, turned on data roaming on phone setting, but also made sure to default mobile data to use this travel eSIM instead of Singtel SIM before reaching Taiwan so I won't incur any unnecessary, expensive data roaming charges on my line. And I also purposely went into Singtel app's roaming page to see what else I need to set away. Couldnt find anything amiss.

Then when I reached Taiwan and disabled my airplane mode, I received this shocking SMS:

9BcII8l.jpeg

Thinking I have already purposely set to use my travel eSIM by default so why am I still incurring data roaming charge to my Singtel line?

Opening up Singtel App greeted me with a rude awakening:

qQgAwKv.jpeg

Hysterically incurred $74 data roaming charges out of thin air?

Then I went straight following SMS link and found this:

Y6Mj1oI.jpeg

Which was defaulted to switch ON back then. This is where all the puzzle fits together.

Apart from phone's own data roaming toggle, you still need to additionally turn off this manually in order to fully turn off data roaming!

As such, I believe I was accidentally charged for that split second of transient data roaming usage as I disabled my phone's airplane mode and Singtel network ownself tries to connect to Taiwan's local data roaming network (despite me already defaulted phone's mobile data setting to use travel eSIM data and not to use Singtel SIM card's data) while my travel eSIM line also did the same to connect to network proper.

To highlight, that particular Data Roaming toggle on SingTel app is parked on settings page rather than within the roaming page menu.

And when I read further, Singtel's Pay-As-U-Roam is charging a whopping $25/MB of usage . Peeps so this is how I began my Taiwan trip.

Right now I am in the midst of escalating this dispute to Singtel and hopefully they will issue a full waiver on it.

Peeps who are on SingTel line and travelling soon, please ensure to take additional precaution to turn off data roaming toggle on BOTH your phone and Singtel's app.

Then again, Singtel should comes clear:

1. Why is there another data roaming toggle in the first place?
2. Why is it also turned on by default without any caution? Even with phone settings they are always off by default to prevent any unnecessary charges with caution when turning on too.
3. And why is it also not parked together with your other roaming menu and rather parked separately under settings in its own menu?

Actually have you try to off the ST SIM? Like that technically wouldn't be using it at all right?

I only did after all of these cos my original intent was to keep line on for OTP SMS but data strictly off and this was it. :(

Anyway over this weekend, I've also been to Jay Chou concert at the National Stadium. I reached just in time at 7.15pm while most people were already seated in. I was on the floor seat section.

This time round I didn't purchase Singtel's Data Express Pass as I want to see how solid their line is without their in-house steroid

My phone had both Singtel 5G and Giga 4G.

Both were totally usable this time round and I could run speedtest as well. Just that Giga 4G loaded stuff significantly slower which was also shown in speed test result.

This was from Singtel 5G SA:

This was from Giga 4G:

I saved my $5 this time round and next time you don't need to keke.

And no worries I did all these tests running in the background while I was busy filming Jay performing his hits and only captured these results during intermission. So I still get to fully enjoy the show. He sang most of the songs and truly redeemed himself from last shows' complaints. :s13:

2 things u needed to do before heading off to Taiwan.

1- Turn off data roaming for singtel line even thought u had set default data line to be using that temp taiwan sim. Roaming data flow can still go on if u NEVER turn off data roaming for Singtel line.

2 - My Singtel App, turn off "roaming Data".. I always had this option turn off and it will not be turn on ever after.

I'm not sure why you get hit by Pay-As-You-Roam. By right you should hit on AutoReadyRoam which aims to minimize your spending.

I removed AutoReadyRoam when I first gotten this line as I have no intention to auto subscribe to any of their roaming plans when I'm abroad.

cancelled long ago, used to use local (e)sim.
now with MVNOs that offer lots of roaming data and IDD calls, life is much easier.
edit: before anyone flames me, ok, Simba is an MNO

singtel internet on red and blue line super lousy recently..got full bar but internet data not moving at all...

I mentioned several time on blue line underground the singal is there but data wldnt move de

tbh, ST 5G oso lagging even though they claims to be 5G covered in all MRT underground

I thought it is only me on the DTL... I would imagine that at least got 1/3 of the crowded MRT every morning on ST but all so happy scrolling their phones (and not complaining...) My IG is not loading at all (from Bedok North to MacPherson) except that it will try to load when the train stopped at the station...

How to submit feedback on network? Last time, I remb it was on the My Singtel app?

I saw recontract plans are cheaper..I want to change to this after 3rd month...

Singtel got different channels (Web, Facebook, Singtel Shop, 1688, WhatsApp, Roadshow, etc) and they kind of compete with each other. So do not listen to what they tell you, just click the link and see how it goes.

When my family ported in to Singtel, I found this setting when digging through the roaming settings to make sure my parents don't incur roaming costs.

The setting has been there for at least a year. :/

i was wondering whether i can request for transfer of ownership for my mobile line? i am currently enjoying the discounted rates of $20.37!

What if i transfer my number to my friend at singtelshop, would my friend be able to continue enjoy the discounted rates or he would have to pay $30.56?

Does anyone here have any idea?

If your plan is under contract usually the telco will not allow transfer of ownership, have to wait until out of contract.
