yep that makes sense, i know they use RJ45 - that is fine. I will have sfp+ connection with sfp+ rj45 transceiver so router and ONT will be connected via normal RJ45 lan cable. What I want to know is if 5Gbe plan comes with device which will communicate at 10 Gbe speeds locally as those are more compatible and common than 5Gbe

The link between the ONT and gateway will be 10Gbps if your gateway support 10Gbps. Speed will capped at 5Gbps by StarHub for 5Gbps plan.

I did not consider M1 2.5Gbps that time also partially because their ONT does not support 10Gbps link between gateway and ONT. And mine doesnt have or support for 2.5Gbps port

This is great thank you

Same ONT, Nokia XS-240X-A with single 10G RJ45 port.
Thank you!

With this then I should be able to go with almost any pfsense compatible mini box. off to check out some reviews :)

i use to have Homehub 1G plan and then i signed the Homehub 10G, they unbundled the digital voice from my old plan and bundled to the new plan. May be this plan too cheap so SH is not willing to do it or do not allow it.
I think yours is considered as recontact not new sign-up. For recontract, they can port over the existing digital voice number. The $29.55 plan is considered as new sign-up which they are not supposed to allow existing user to sign-up. For this case, they activate the 2nd TP port to allow existing user to sign-up.

Not as per the SOP from Starhub. The installer is not supposed to tell you the super-admin password. But it is said to be displayed on the installer's iPad and you may happen to be able to record down the password.

I do not think it is worth of the risk if you do not like unbridged ONR.
This is correct. I sniped the super admin password from the installer’s iPad. It is a random generated password, and likely specific to each ONT.

There is a section to configure bridged / routing mode but only editable with the super admin account.

Hi may i get some advice for the experts here? right now i am on m1 500mbps in a 3 storey terrace with wifi 6 deco 50 mesh setups in each floor on ethernet overhaul. would getting ont + hb710 and connect to a 1gb switch to rest of APs until 10gb switch is more affordable and upgrade the switch connected from hb710 and rest of network devices be a good solution?
The Deco X50 uses Deco Mesh, which is incompatible with Easy Mesh on the HB710 so you can never create a single mesh of the whole network. You might want to consider the $360 EB810v from Starhub, which has 1 10GbE LAN port and three 2.5GbE LAN ports. You can then run the X50 mesh off the EB810v's LAN ports until you decide to replace them with HB710s running Easy Mesh. Otherwise you won't get much benefit off the X50 satellites (other than going from M1 500mbps to 1Gbps) from the 5Gbps plan. Getting a HB710 and a switch is slightly cheaper, but if you do, get a 2.5GbE switch, which is not expensive. No point getting a 1GbE switch at this point.

There should be no issue running two separate Mesh networks as you upgrade slowly from Deco Mesh to Easy Mesh except that when you roam from Deco Mesh to Easy Mesh, you may face a sharp transition. For example, if you are on a WhatsApp video call while walking to another floor with a different mesh, it may cut off.

The ideal network for you is a Deco Mesh of three Deco BE85 routers, which will cost $2k or three ASUS BQ16, which will cost $2.5k. So getting three HB710s for $576 is a super bargain, since it will give you everything those expensive meshes have including 10Gbps backhaul. Thank you Starhub and TP-Link :D

I have a large Easy Mesh and it works extremely well. I cheaped out a bit and bought TP-Link BE230s from Carousell for $100. I also have one HB710.

So ONR plan comes with ONR + Modem 1 + Modem 2

ONT plan only with the ONT.

The fibre modem is not cross compatible?

Do not use the "modem" word now which is mainly used in the ADSL/Cable era, rather you use ONT/ONR and Router.

But if you really want to use "modem" word.
ONT = Fibre modem
ONR = ONT + usually basic router = Fibre modem router

ONR plan = Nokia XS-2426X-A ONR (AX5400) + Nokia Beacon 2 (AX1800, lousy mesh node)
ONT plan = just the plain Nokia XS-240X-A, you need to use your own router

1) If you do not have issues with ONR (limited features, can only use the lousy Nokia Beacon 2 as mesh node), then go ahead with the ONR option. Nokia XS-2426X-A ONR (AX6000 rated) itself seems to be decent in terms of wireless performance.

I tend to think for average users who can use Ethernet backhaul (between Nokia ONR and Nokia Beacon 2), then indeed the ONR option is a better deal.

2) Starhub will not help you to bridge the ONR. It is said that the super-admin password is generated at the installation time. If you miss that one-time password, there are no successful story to bridge the Nokia ONR.

So if you do not want to use unbridged ONR, go for the ONT option.

3) If you are a power user who like to use a more feature rich or more powerful router, then go with the ONT option.

If single wireless router can not cover the flat and you can not use Ethernet backhaul, then even if you are an average user, go for the ONT option and get two units HB710 to form a mesh with wireless backhaul.

4) With HB710 at S$192, I tend to think ONT option is the better option for those who are willing to spend S$192. For those who do not want to spend S$192, then probably just go with the ONR option.

So the ONR and ONT are 2 different Fibre Modem.
Can’t get the ONR plan and use their supplied router. Then switch to ONT (mode) if the router sucks

Again, please do not use the "modem" word from now on.

As per the previous reports, they don't support changing the ONR to ONT for this low cost special 5Gbps offer at S$29.55 per month.

For the higher tier Starhub 5Gbps/10Gbps plans, the reports here show that it is possible to change from ONR to ONT, with some negotiation power to be used from the user.

Yes you can.

Since you are using the ONT, you can just disconnect the Nokia Beacon 2, connect your RT-AX82U to the ONT and it should work (unless you are using SingTel before).

If it does not work, factory reset the RT-AX82U and carry out the setup again.

Thanks for the fast response xiaofan. I assume the RT-AX82u will perform better than the nokia beacon in term of wifi speed.

The ont link can use for existing user? Moi on starhub 500 plan. Or is it for new user?

Installation/ activation charges is free for ont?

Both the ONT and ONR special 5Gbps offer links are meant for the new users. However, existing users have been reported to be able to sign up and get waiver for the charges, either using the online link or go to the physical stores. If you go to the physical store, you may need to show them the online link since some of them may not know of the offer.

Take note for existing users, this is considered as a new sign-up and not a recontract. It is just that Starhub may make it like a recontract with the waivers.

BTW, I actually decided to keep the 500Mbps no-contract plan myself. Just lazy and it is good enough for the use case (not my main Internet plan).
