dun buy into the government's propaganda that singapore has got no land
singapore has got NO FREE LAnd for the govt to use
if they wanna take back certain parcels, it is gonna involve a high cost
see how big ridout is?
see how many GCBs there are?
one small plot of land now can house even more people with 'advancement in building tech' that's why build upwards of 40 floor
with more efficient layouts and surface carpakrs now removed and become a MSCP
with more landed factories getting removed and moved into HDB type of factories and reclaimed land
with lesser babies and more army camps being cleared out

where got not enough land? it is just not cheap enough for the government to play the shuffling game

ya lo.. so very expensive to "create" more land here.. the cheapest way is to expand into or rather merge with JB lo :) cheaper, much cheaper

that why our govt welcome "merger" with JB , economic merger, not political merger

There is no reason to run Singapore even more like a company in the first place. It's bad enough now there is no need to take it even further. How does this benefit the average worker though.
alamak, we are already being run like a company by the white party liao .... sinkies voted for it ... so if they want to expand , what can we do?

So merger with JB is like business expanding ... but the voters allow it .. we can only diam diam

i haven't talk about the country clubs
one small island
have to have so many golf courses to cater to the elites 1%
so many means competition, means have to keep prices low to attract members?

lack of foresight by government. It a railway that is at the expense of Singapore. Still don't see how it will benefit most Singaporeans.

I tell u something i predict.. next time singapore mainland is for the elites

Retiress old unproductive ppl and those cannot afford living in the so called mainland can go to jb..

Singapore = bukit timah for elites,
JB = outline area for low ses and old unproductive retirees.

With so many EDMWers against, seems like this would be a success. Reverse indicator. :s13:

But a lot of what the current govt has done has fared badly leh. Including things that are much more straightforward. Dont think the current govt is competent enough to do this right.

Some examples: ERP 2.0, simplygo, Income sellout, NRIC fiasco.

I think EDMW has been against most of these as well.

In future Singapore will be just a base for companies for finance/tax/marketing etc related, its too costly for factories or manufacturing

Imagine what would happen if there is a change in govt in malaysia. We are really setting ourselves up for failure.

this treaty will cause alot of change in the ground.

SG companies will need to compete with JB companies who are more hungry, and priced in the 3.5x.

all your ac serviceman, service industries, office administration, will have to compete with JB sez populace, who are hungrier.

and also forces businesses to in order to be competitive, also adapt by hiring cheaper better faster.

it will depress wages of locals while fighting a losing battle with cheaper better faster.

Those SG companies that can outsource already have offices in KL liao. The only difference is it will be closer to setup office in JB.

people don't understand, that while SG company have to adapt to myr level of competitive pricing.

myr does not need to, to come eat SG pie.

what this means = massive reprice of labor costs and productivity.

that includes the balancing act of everything from houses, cost of living, income.

problem here is those hedge on million dollar hdbs, can they afford a reprice of their salaries to adapt to the new competition.

Exactly.

I can tell you from a business point of view, why not I hire 3x Malaysians for 1/3 salary. Station 1 manager here to manage them?

Reduce cost, reduce office rental. Same productivity. And can change new car more often

singapore scholars must have calculated the risks and rewards.. probably...

maybe they thinking pushing all the lower value added activities in the food chain to Johor..
then all the corporate HQ will be in Singapore..

So it becomes easy for manufacturing biz units to be based there.. but the SEA regional HQ will be here.

Singapore has been pursing this strategy all along..since LKY time.
always dropping lower value activity ... and pushing for higher value activity in singapore.
And developing singapore into a financial hub for the region. (I would think Financial hub here is more suitable than the surrounding regions due to our low crime rate and mild crime(very seldom got kidnapping and guns involved).

It could be the govt already did the risk assessment ..that to be relevant as a regional HQ, this is the last step liao. If not, people moved out.

But this should be the last ditch effort liao.
coz once the biz units are settled down there... and the free trade zone culture starts to form .... (workers who choose to work inside adopt to the international biz miindset , not the lepak mindset) ... then slowly .. the regional HQ might feel comfortable in moving more corporate functions there.

So I forsee... these culture and willingness to shift more corporate functions inside .. will take place in 10 years time.

then singapore.. really only can rely on very strong financial hub and entertainment hub to retain the main critical corporate functions (usually the C_suites would like to be here) here...

and the entertainment hub will be probably a "las vegas" strip style island or the whole stretch facing the sea at the marina ... where striptease, recreational drugs etc can be done. while the kids and family can go to more shopping and theme parks created here. Casino was the first phase.
