Hi,
I will be travelling overseas soon. Through Booking.Com, I have secured my accommodation in which the properties belong to hosts. It is my first time staying in an apartment owned by a host (the host won't be staying there).

- Will they ask for passport/identity cards for verification?
- Will they demand a deposit from me (even though Booking.com didn't state so)
I am not comfortable with passing my passport/IC to them for photocopying etc. or a deposit since Booking.com didn't demand for it.

Please assist with my above enquiries. Thank you.

So you gave them your passport to photocopy and they returned it to you?

If you booked from booking.com, then it isn’t Airbnb liao. Airbnb ish another company.

But yes, what you have booked is an apartment. From what you have described. Airbnb ish also apartments own by owners. Just that some owners advertised on Booking.

Apartment sure have a host and/or co-host which is owner and/or co-host mah.

Your payment term should be clearly indicated when you made your booking. Did you pay in full online already that day when you made booking, or will pay in full once reached a specific date, or you need to pay upon arrival? I am more expert on Agoda and Expedia but all these sites more or less the same. Check your email and credit card transaction. How come you duno if you have paid or not and how much. :o

I don’t think there is simi deposit.

For verification, they will state so. If never state then no need to show lor. Airbnb needs to show liao, last time no need.

They will ask for your passport image. It's for your safety and their property protection

I have booked air bnb in Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam. Never required passport in these countries. The host didn't ask also.

For deposit, it was never asked. Follow their instructions and treat their house your own. Most will need you to take video and whatsapp them to ensure gas, electricity, water are off.

Most airbnb units are managed by property agents. Owners don't have time to liase back and forth with you, they just collect rent from the agent. Nobody is even keen to see you or say hi. They just text you detailed instructions on how to get there, how to go pass security, where to get the key from mailbox, passwords, etc. Have done airbnb in Japan, Korea and Malaysia - never get to see owner nor agent.

Yes. It's through Booking.com. What I mean is that for Booking.com apartments (from hosts), do I hand over my passport if they request for it? It is not stated that I must in Booking.com

I am going to stay in several apartments. Some have paid while some to be paid when I reach there. But I guess it is safer to pay everything in full through Booking.com

My apology. It should be Booking.com and not Air BnB. However, I am booking apartments which belonged to the hosts. I am going to Australia, so not sure whether they will be asking me to pass them my passport. It is not stated in Booking.com that I must pass my passport to them though.

I heard it's a requirement in Europe. Not sure about other countries. After looking at the posts from some here, it seems that it differs from one country to another.
