If you don't mind elaborating, what needs do each serve better?

I'm still on the fence as I see from catching up on the threads (this one and your other very useful ones) that the SH plan is highly recommended.

What attracts me to the SH 5Gbps plan:
  • Saves me $10.15/mth ($39.70 vs $29.55)
  • ONT instead of ONR
  • 5Gbps > 3 Gbps
The only thing holding me back from cancelling the ST 3Gbps Enhance plan:
  • 2 x TP Link HB611 routers, so I can place one in my bedroom to eliminate dead zones/improve WiFi strength.

Are there any other considerations I'm missing?

And if you were in my shoes, which would you pick?

1) I will choose Starhub because of the ONR vs ONT thingy. But that is just me. I do not recommend new users to sign up with Singtel because of ONR.

I understand most average users may not be bothered with ONR, but then it limits the choice in the future if the average users become a power user.

Even if we ignore ONR vs ONT thingy, you can compare in the following way.

Starhub S$29.55 per month --> ONT + HB710, if one HB710 is not good enough for wireless coverage, then add one more HB710 at S$192 from Starhub, effective price is S$37.55 per month with two HB710.

HB710 (dual 10G ports, triband BE18000) is better than HB611-SGST (dual 2.5G ports, dual 1G ports, triband BE11000).

Starhub ONT + 2 x HB710 (S$37.55 per month) > Singtel ONR + 2 x HB611-SGST (S$39.90 per month)

Even if adding digital voice (Starhub digital voice is not free, S$2.14 per month), the price is more or less the same but Starhub bundled router is better.

Starhub ONT + 2 x HB710 (S$37.55+S$2.14= S$39.69 per month with digital voice) > Singtel ONR + 2 x HB611-SGST (S$39.90 per month)

Only catch is that HB710 has less LAN ports, so if you want the LAN ports in the rooms to be functional, then you have to add a 2.5G/10G switch (about S$100) or at least a 2.5G switch (at about S$50).

10G capable switches:

Hasivo S600W-4GT-2XGT-SE, RMB 499 listed, quad 2.5G ports, two 10G RJ45 ports
Hasivo S600W-4GT-2SX-SE, RMB 219 listed, quad 2.5G ports, two 10G SFP+ ports --> you can use this as a 2.5G switch first, yet with possibility to add 10Gbe support with 10G SFP+ to RJ45 module (about S$20).

Hasivo S600W-4GT-2XGT-SE is probably the cheapest you can find. You should look at the price at Taobao 海思视讯 shop and it is only at RMB 699 listed price --> now about RMB 499 in Feb 2025.

Hasivo S600W-4GT-2SX-SE, RMB 219 listed, quad 2.5G ports, two 10G SFP+ ports
Hasivo S600W-4GT-1SX-1XGT-SE, RMB 399 listed, quad 2.5G ports, one 10G RJ45 port and one 10G SFP+ port
Hasivo S600W-4GT-2XGT-SE, RMB 499 listed, quad 2.5G ports, two 10G RJ45 ports

2) For existing Singtel users who have no issues with ONR, then it is a bit hard to choose. I usually recommend existing users to try to recontract, unless you got issues with existing ISP or the other ISP has got much better offers. But in this case either way is okay. I will lean more toward recontract with Singtel because of the hassle of swtiching to another ISP.

Thanks so much for your analysis! Very very helpful 🙇‍♂️

Hello,
Need some help here. Got the HB611-SGST for recontract (3Gbps) . They just installed it and I have my Deco X20 which i bought it on my own previously. Could not link them together as i thought they are able to link something like a mesh system thing. How do i link/connect my X20 to my new HB611 as the reason i bought my X20 was because my room has some dead spot and the previous singtel mesh that they gave me was bad and it was spoilt. Pls explain in an understandable way?😂 tryna learn here.

HG611-SGST uses TP-Link EasyMesh Technology.

Deco X20 uses TP-Link Deco Mesh technology.

They are not compatible in terms of mesh technology.

What you can do is to use two SSIDs.

SingTel ONR 10G LAN port --> HB611-SGST in AP/bridge mode, first wireless SSID, installation done by SingTel.

SingTel ONR 1G LAN port 1 --> Deco X20 first unit in AP mode, second wireless SSID. You have to set up by yourself.

SingTel ONR 1G LAN port 1 --> Deco X20 second unit, second wireless SSID (if you have two Deco X20). Add this node as a mesh node for the first Deco, from the Deco App.

How to set up Deco Mesh in AP mode?

Ahh i see thanks for the explanation. But what are other compatible items for the HB611-SGST to fill up the dead zones as I know tht my X20 will eventually fill up the dead zones, just wanna know for the knowledge . And like what exactly is this HB611-SGST as i was searching through the tp-link website and reading from this forum the HB611-SGST is like a router and a mesh… its confusing me.

1) TP-Link EasyMesh compatible routers
HB611-SGST is a TP-Link Service Ptovider model with the support of TP-Link EasyMesh technology.

TP-Link EasyMesh compatible routers:
https://www.tp-link.com/sg/easymesh/
https://www.tp-link.com/sg/service-provider/wifi-router/

If you can use Ethernet Backhaul, you can get things like TP-Link Archer BE230 (less than S$100). You can also check if Singtel can sell you another HB611-SGST.

If you have to use wireless backhaul, you can get Starhub issued HB710 (S$192, dual 10G ports, triband BE18000, better than HB611-SGST) as the main node and then your HB611-SGST as the mesh node. You can also check if Singtel can sell you another HB611-SGST.

2) More aboute consumer mesh system, Ethernet Backhaul vs Wireless Backhaul
https://dongknows.com/mesh-wi-fi-system-explained/

No need to differentiate mesh router and mesh router now --> all the current generation of main stream consumer routers (WiFi 6/6E/7) all support some types of mesh technology.

Example:
TP-Link Archer --> TP-Link EasyMesh
TP-Link Deco --> TP-Link Deco mesh
Asus "normal" router and ZenWiFi --> Asus AImesh

Ok, I understand it better now. Since Im on Singtel, it would not possible for me to get the Starhub issues HB710 as my main node but can i do it personally like buy the HB710 and set it up on my own? Or is it better for me to get another HB611 if im able to get it from Singtel?

Probably the last question 😅. Also thank you very much in advance for the detail explanation.

Either way is okay.

If you ask SingTel for support, they may ask you to buy either HB611-SGST (not so sure about the price) or the more expensive HB810 (S$16.80 * 24 = S$403.2).

Hi, im able to get the HB611-SGST for (S$10.80 * 24 = S$259.20). I did ask if im able to get the HB810 but the support say i must use the same model for its compatibility. Idk if the support is trippin or he dk😂

The Singtel support person is probably following SingTel's official policy: HB810 to mesh with HB810, HB611-SGST to mesh with HB611-SGST.

Starhub officially supports HB710/EB810v to mesh with each other.

Neither Stahub nor SingTel will officially support mesh of HB710 and HB611-SGST.

Anyways, i just got the HB611 instead of the HB810 as it is a cheaper option and to just fill up the dead spot that i have at my home. Only use for normal gaming and watching videos or dramas. If i plan to expand/or get better connection in the future i would just buy the TP-Link Archer or some alternative.
Talking abt this, do you have any recommendations for the Archer and the alternatives??

If you can use Ethernet Backhaul, then TP-Link Archer BE230 is a cost effective mesh node, about S$85 BNIB from Carousell, dumped by M1 users.

May I ask why is TP BE230 a more cost effective mesh node if house have option to connect HB611 via ethernet? Is it because TP BE230 cannot form mesh with HB611 without Ethernet connection? Thanks!

Take note I was comparing HB611-SGST vs Archer BE230.

Archer BE230 supports TP-Link EasyMesh and it is cheaper than HB611-SGST. But then it is dual band and not a very good option to use with wireless backhaul.

Wireless backhaul (also okay for Ethernet backhaul) --> HB810 + HB810, HB810+HB611-SGST, HB611-SGST+HB611-SGST

Ethernet backhaul (not good for wireless backhaul) --> HB810+Archer BE230, HB611-SGST+Archer BE230, Archer BE230 + Archer BE230.

May I check are you currently on 1gbps plan and how long left to contract end when you received this? Thanks

The above offer is supposed to be the same as the link I collected in the sticky thread.
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/...on-latest-promo-deals.6665380/#post-138746082

1. 3Gbps plan at S$29.90, supposed to be only for new users and targeted existing users
