SINGAPORE – Labour chief Ng Chee Meng said he is prepared to contest the Jalan Kayu single seat at the upcoming polls if Prime Minister Lawrence Wong decides to field him in the newly formed constituency.

Mr Ng, who is the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) secretary-general, was spotted on the evening of March 28 visiting residents door to door at a Housing Board block in Sengkang West, which is in Jalan Kayu SMC.

Speaking to reporters at Block 457A Sengkang West, he said: “I’ve been going around the Fernvale-Jalan Kayu area and am very happy to see many residents.

“And they’ve been quite open to also share with me some of their aspirations, some of the impact of the municipal issues that are always quite common in a big estate like this.

“So, if PM Wong does send me here, I look forward to serving the residents of Fernvale and Jalan Kayu.”

:s14:
Is he the one that trigger the Income - Allianz sale? Or it was others in NTUC?
Bro Ng didn't walk the ground in Jalan Kayu SMC for even a few years and he's so sure he can win?!
Most of 60% probably don't care if they walking the grounds or not...

Just orbigoot to the 60% when karma hits them...

The People's Action Party (PAP) is positioning itself to retake Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming General Election by leveraging several key strategies. These include introducing fresh, diverse faces, addressing past controversies, and capitalising on broader national political trends.

The Reversal of the Swing After Lee Kuan Yew's Passing:

The death of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, in March 2015, was a transformative moment in the nation’s political landscape. His passing marked the end of an era, and in the years following, there was a noticeable reversal of the electoral swing that had occurred in the 2011 General Election, when the PAP faced significant losses. In the 2015 General Election, Singaporeans, particularly those in urban constituencies, rallied around the PAP, helping the party achieve a resounding victory with nearly 70% of the popular vote. This resurgence was driven by a renewed desire for stability and continuity under the PAP, reflecting the legacy of Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership.

For Sengkang GRC, which was won marginally by the Workers' Party (WP) in 2020, the national trend post-2015 remains relevant. While the PAP faced a loss in Sengkang GRC in 2020, the broader political environment suggests that a shift back toward the PAP could be likely in the upcoming election, as voters may once again be drawn to the stability and continuity that the PAP represents.

Introduction of New Faces and Strategic Team Shifts:

In recent months, the PAP has introduced a new team for Sengkang GRC, aiming to rejuvenate its presence and connect with the evolving electorate. The appointments of younger, diverse candidates such as Associate Professor Elmie Nekmat, a communications expert, and Theodora Lai Xi Yi, a young professional with a background in digital strategy, signal the party’s commitment to better represent a wide range of residents. These candidates are seen as having the expertise to address the concerns of both younger voters and working professionals, helping to broaden the PAP's appeal in increasingly diverse constituencies like Sengkang.

This strategic reshuffling mirrors the PAP’s broader national efforts to bring in fresh blood while maintaining the core values associated with its longstanding governance. As the electorate in Sengkang becomes more attuned to a blend of innovation and stability, the PAP’s new team is well-positioned to capitalise on this sentiment.

Addressing Controversies:

The resignation of Workers' Party MP Raeesah Khan in 2021, following her admission of lying in Parliament, left a shadow over Sengkang GRC. This incident was a massive blow to the WP, and many observers believe it showed up the party’s weakness in its recruitment efforts. The PAP, meanwhile, has consistently emphasised its commitment to transparency and accountability, positioning itself as the party that upholds integrity. In the wake of Khan’s resignation, the PAP can contrast its own track record of responsible leadership with the controversies that have plagued its opposition. This is likely to resonate with voters in Sengkang, especially those concerned with trust and credibility in their representatives. As for reputational hits arising from personal infidelities, both the ruling and key opposition parties have endured similar fates.

Emphasis on Diversity and Representation:

A key part of the PAP’s strategy for retaking Sengkang GRC is its focus on diversity and representation. Dr. Lam Pin Min, the PAP’s Sengkang GRC team leader, has made clear that the new team is designed to reflect a broad spectrum of the electorate. This includes not only younger professionals like Lai and Nekmat but also experienced community leaders. The diverse makeup of the team is aimed at reassuring residents that their concerns will be heard and addressed, whether they are related to family needs, youth issues, or professional aspirations.

This move is an attempt to reconnect with voters who may have felt that the PAP had become disconnected from their evolving concerns, particularly younger voters who have become more prominent in the electorate since Lee Kuan Yew’s death. With candidates who can relate to both the changing demographic and the desire for practical governance, the PAP hopes to rebuild its relationship with Sengkang’s diverse population.

Therefore, the PAP has a strong chance of reclaiming Slumkang GRC in the coming election and restoring it to the rightful Sengkang that it should be.
I think the results for GE 2015 is an outlier due to the recency of Ah Gong's death. Young voters and new citizens that never lived through Ah Gong's era won't remember his legacy.

Just stating and accepting the obvious and moving on from there.
It is better than demanding for a strong mandate so that they can DO SOMETHING for the residents.

What did they do after getting so much strong mandate under the previous boss ?
Monitoring issues, brushing off serious questions, fixing the other side and creating saga.
That is what we are getting after giving you the mandate for the past 2 decades with our livelihood becoming worse every 5 years.

If that is the case, it is better off giving the tick to the other side so that they can make all of you cough out the answers and addressing any issues immediately.
And not wait for 5 years later to fix it.
When PAP got strong mandate, they ignore the voters' issues like high cost of living, increase GST when there is also high inflation in 2023 and 2024, import foreign talent and trash to compete with limited jobs and resources in Singapore, and have corruption saga, did our lives improved from 2020 to now?

The elites, the monitors, the business owners, the landlord and coffers improved their income for sure.
