Considering many called Thailand a “third world” country but only 1 building under construction collapsed in a 4.9 magnitude, I would say their buildings are actually quite sturdy. Expected worst when they say Bangkok is shaking cos their buildings are not built for earthquakes to begin with.
Many vid on social media showing huge cracks on the walls n ceiling of many building

You don't see their skyscraper collapse right?

Don't know why, recently saw a video similar with this one just few days before the earthquake.

It took three nerve-racking hours after a powerful earthquake struck on March 28 before Mr Hein Htet Zaw could get through to his family in Myanmar.

The 27-year-old was in Peninsula Plaza - dubbed Singapore’s Little Myanmar - when he heard that his home city Mandalay had been rocked by the magnitude-7.7 temblor.

“I was very worried, very scared the earthquake had killed my family,” Mr Hein told The Straits Times, adding that his loved ones were “very lucky” to have escaped unscathed.

However, he said his heart is “broken” over the extensive damage in his hometown, a sentiment echoed by many of his countrymen when ST visited Peninsula Plaza on March 29.

A Burmese quality specialist who wanted to be known only as Ms Aung said: “It is already difficult to access essential needs in Myanmar, so now with the earthquake it’s worse. The hospitals are overwhelmed and it’s very difficult for rescue teams to reach there.”

Myanmar has been embroiled in a civil war likely to complicate rescue operations since 2021, when the military junta staged a coup. It has since put out a rare call for aid “from any country”.

Though all her kin are unharmed, the 29-year-old said she was worried and sad for her compatriots. She plans to donate money for aid.

Ms Wilt Yee, who works as a cleaner in Singapore, has been anxiously posting near-constant updates on the precarious situation on Facebook for her friends and family in Mandalay.

The 39-year-old plans to give $1,000 to monasteries to help with relief work, she said. Her friends here, including a Singaporean, have already passed her some $300.

Meanwhile, a caregiver based in Singapore said her father had dashed back home from his workplace in Mandalay to look for her mother, who has walking difficulties.

The 35-year-old, who gave her name only as Ms Gugue, said her parents are now without water and electricity. “I wish I was back in Myanmar with my family but I can only get updates through them,” she lamented.

As of 2:00 pm on 29 March 2025, the SAC reported that more than 1,000 persons were killed and more than 2,300 were injured. These numbers are expected to continue to rise.

Independent media has so far, among others, reported the following major impacts. The reports certainly do not cover all casualties and damages, and not all reports may be accurate due to the difficulties in collecting information from the disaster area.

  • ∎ Collapse of the air traffic control tower at the Nay Pyi Taw airport, killing 5 persons; collapse of several ministry buildings, among them those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labour; fatalities include the MoL’s permanent secretary and several foreign officials.
  • ∎ 86 persons killed in Pyinmana (the old city next to the greenfield site on which Nay Pyi Taw was constructed) and approx. 500 persons injured in urgent need of medical treatment.
  • ∎ Collapse of the Sinthay Lelway Dam in Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw.
  • ∎ Many buildings collapsed in the city of Mandalay, among them the U Hla Thein Temple which buried more than 80 monks, the Sky Villa Condo with many fatalities, the Aung Chan Aung Orthopedic Clinic, the high-rising Great Wall Hotel, the Myit Sone Hotel, as well as monasteries, the Palace wall, and historical pagodas. The airport suffered significant damage to its building and the runway and is expected to be closed for 3 months. The bridge leading to the airport collapsed.
  • ∎ The Mandalay University building partly collapsed and caught fire. Furthermore, San Chaik Hmaw Auk Ward in the city of Mandalay burned to the ground.
  • ∎ 36 fatalities in Wundwin Township in Mandalay Region.
  • ∎ Collapse of many buildings in Pyawbwe Township, Mandalay Region.
  • ∎ Destruction of 80% of the city of Sagaing. Among the infrastructure destroyed is the entire fire department. The two bridges over the Irrawaddy connecting Sagaing and Mandalay are either destroyed or impassable, cutting off land communication.
  • ∎ More than 30 persons died in Nyaungshwe Township (Lake Inle) in Shan State. Collapse of a 3-floor hotel in Aungban.
  • ∎ Collapse of a monastery in Taungoo Township in Bago Region, killing at least 5 refugees.
  • ∎ Collapse of at least 50 mosques during Friday prayer, killing nearly 300 persons.
  • ∎ Everywhere, not enough equipment to search for and rescue survivors. People in affected areas are advised to stay outside for fear of aftershocks.
