Goh Meng Seng claims “double standard” in foreign interference stance

Concerns of foreign interference in Singapore’s General Election have made headlines in the past two days.
This morning, Mr Goh Meng Seng, chief of the PPP, weighed in on the issue while speaking to reporters after a walkabout in Tampines Street 81.
He agreed with PM Lawrence Wong’s view that foreign interference should not be injected into local politics.
But he then questioned if President Tharman Shanmugaratnam's role as a member of the Board of Trustees at the World Economic Forum.
"The WEF is a very powerful, influential organisation. Whatever he says might affect our policy direction. Is that a double standard?"
Mr Goh also said the GRC system was an instance of the identity politics which Mr Wong had called on Singaporeans to steer away from.
GRCs in Singapore are required to have minority candidates from different races.
"There is a contradiction in what he says and what he does,” said Mr Goh.
He was asked whether residents would be affected by these developments, which saw authorities blocking social media posts by foreigners — some of which called on voters to pick the WP candidate Faisal Manap over the PAP’s Masagos Zulkifli.
Both are contesting in Tampines GRC, where Mr Goh has also fielded a team.
The PPP chief said Singaporeans treasure peace in the country.
“I do not think anyone can easily upset that. It's just a non-issue."
