The most hotly contested GRC in GE2025 is expected to be Punggol GRC. It’s a brand new constituency with over half its voters aged between 21 to 45, similar to Sengkang GRC in GE2020. The Workers’ Party (WP) has sent in their A-team, led by Senior Counsel Harpreet Singh, who was initially expected to contest in Marine-Parade–Braddell Heights GRC. Alongside him is Alexis Dang, whose popularity online—especially her introduction video with over 100,000 views in two days—has caught attention. Facing them is no lightweight: Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong was reassigned from Chua Chu Kang GRC to anchor the PAP team in Punggol, making this a high-stakes clash.
Another surprise battleground is Tampines GRC, which was traditionally a PAP stronghold and mostly saw contests with National Solidarity Party (NSP) since 2011. But this year, things changed drastically. The WP is fielding not one but two high-profile candidates—Dr Ong Lue Ping, a psychologist from the Institute of Mental Health, and Michael Thng, a Harvard graduate. They’re led by Faisal Manap, a current MP from Aljunied GRC. With both PPP (People’s Power Party) and NSP joining the contest, this GRC has turned into a rare four-cornered fight, potentially splitting the opposition vote.
Moving westward, West-Coast–Jurong-West GRC is another to watch. This new GRC was formed by merging parts of West Coast GRC and Jurong GRC, and it's where Progress Singapore Party (PSP) is sending in their top guns, including 85-year-old Dr Tan Cheng Bock. In GE2020, West Coast GRC had the closest winning margin, and PSP, being the best-performing losing party then, secured two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats. With high visibility and experience from the past five years, PSP’s team here is expected to give PAP a strong challenge.
Among the SMCs, Bukit Panjang SMC is set for a rematch between PAP and SDP’s Dr Paul Tambyah, an infectious disease expert who secured 46.26% of votes in GE2020—one of the narrowest margins. Over at Sembawang West SMC, Dr Chee Soon Juan, the SDP chief, is contesting after his usual ward, Bukit Batok SMC, was absorbed into a GRC. With his 45.20% vote share in 2020 and strong public presence, it’s a seat to watch. Lastly, Mountbatten SMC looked set for a walkover with PAP’s new candidate Gho Sze Kee, a shipping lawyer, until independent candidate Jeremy Tan made a surprise entry at the last moment, turning the quiet ward into an unexpected showdown.
