Targeting the Sunday lunch crowd
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/ge2025-campaigning-day-5-general-election-5090656

It's noon, the sun is out in full force - and so is a team of four candidates from the PAR.

They have been giving out flyers and pamphlets to diners and stall owners here in Jalan Besar GRC, accompanied by some volunteers.

The PAR team contesting Jalan Besar comprises private tutor Chiu Shin Kong, businessman Mohamad Hamim Aliyas, nurse Sarina Abu Hassan, and preschool educator Vigneswari V Ramachandran.

Ms Vigneswari told me they chose to come here as she used to live in the area for 13 years. The team is also aware the elderly like to have their meals here on weekends.

Ms Sarina, in particular, struck up many conversations with members of the public, wowing them - and me - with her proficiency in Mandarin. She said she picked up the language while dealing with patients at her workplace.

Part of the team will later conduct house visits at nearby Housing Board flats.

They are up against a PAP team comprising Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo, Ms Denise Phua, Dr Wan Rizal and Mr Shawn Loh.

More competition is “better for everybody”: PAR

More opposition voices in parliament will “force” the PAP to think harder and be more in touch with the needs of residents on the ground, Jalan Besar GRC candidate for PAR, Mr Chiu Shin Kong said.

He cited how Singapore’s first Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling had to practise harder and swim faster, when he was up against American swimmer Michael Phelps in the 2016 Rio Games.

“As we have been walking the ground very often, they can tap on our experience and we will definitely be very willing to share what we have learnt,” the private tutor said, adding that more competition is “better for everybody".

Mr Chiu was giving out flyers and engaging with the lunch crowd at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, and was met with nods as he addressed the GST hikes and high cost of living.

He was joined by fellow candidate, businessman Mohamad Hamim Aliyas, and a PAR volunteer who is visually impaired.

Mr Chiu also touched on comments that PAP's candidate for Sembawang West SMC Ms Poh Li San made at a rally last week, in response to SDP's proposal to reduce GST.

Ms Poh said currently "50 per cent of Singaporeans do not pay income tax" but more people would have to do so if GST is reduced without an alternative.

Mr Chiu said: “Are they (the PAP) really doing a good job? This shows that they have not managed to get more people to pay income tax."

PAR faces a PAP team led by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo in Jalan Besar.

Denise Phua And Heng C H I can vouch they really work on the ground. To me these 2 carried JB GRC all these years

I haven't seen them before... As for small space, only seen her once during the last election.
