More opposition voices in parliament will “force” the PAP to think harder and be more in touch with the needs of residents on the ground, Jalan Besar GRC candidate for PAR, Mr Chiu Shin Kong said.
He cited how Singapore’s first Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling had to practise harder and swim faster, when he was up against American swimmer Michael Phelps in the 2016 Rio Games.
“As we have been walking the ground very often, they can tap on our experience and we will definitely be very willing to share what we have learnt,” the private tutor said, adding that more competition is “better for everybody".
Mr Chiu was giving out flyers and engaging with the lunch crowd at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, and was met with nods as he addressed the GST hikes and high cost of living.
He was joined by fellow candidate, businessman Mohamad Hamim Aliyas, and a PAR volunteer who is visually impaired.
Mr Chiu also touched on comments that PAP's candidate for Sembawang West SMC Ms Poh Li San made at a rally last week, in response to SDP's proposal to reduce GST.
Ms Poh said currently "50 per cent of Singaporeans do not pay income tax" but more people would have to do so if GST is reduced without an alternative.
Mr Chiu said: “Are they (the PAP) really doing a good job? This shows that they have not managed to get more people to pay income tax."
