‘Five years of hard work brought us here’, says PAP’s Liang Eng Hwa of Bukit Panjang win
Bukit Panjang incumbent PAP MP Mr Liang Eng Hwa was all smiles as he spoke to The Straits Times at Bukit Gombak Stadium about his decisive victory of 61.41 per cent of votes over SDP’s Paul Tambyah.
He attributed the win - and notable vote share swing of almost 8 per cent towards the PAP - to not just a good campaign, but consistent hard work in the last five years.
“I'm glad that residents see the hard work put in, the improvements and also endorse the plans for the next five years,” said Mr Liang, who is set to begin his fifth term as an MP.
He added: “What we have promised, we have delivered.”
Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, who is leading the PAP team in nearby Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, said Mr Liang was “too humble” and called his win a “significant victory”.
In Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Dr Balakrishnan’s team also clinched a significant 79.29 per cent of the votes against new challenger Red Dot United.
The minister noted that the election has taken place at a time when the world is in a state of uncertainty and flux, and voters have expressed that concern at the ballot box.
“It is a reminder for all of us that when times get tough, you need a tried and tested team where we will do our best to secure a brighter future for the next generation,” said Dr Balakrishnan.
