Ng Chee Meng issues lawyer's letter to Facebook user over 'false, misleading & defamatory' allegations​

Ng Chee Meng, secretary-general of NTUC and Member of Parliament (MP) for Jalan Kayu, has issued a lawyer's letter to a Facebook user over allegations about him.

In a May 12 statement, Ng referred to posts put up by one Sng Chia Huat and called them "false, misleading, and defamatory".

Sng, who goes by Rich Sng on Facebook, had published a number of posts on Facebook with regards to a picture of Ng and Fujian gang member Su Haijin.

The photos were reportedly taken at a dinner around 2020.

Su was arrested amid a billion-dollar money laundering probe in August 2023.

Previously, Ng responded to allegations about the photo and explained that he is often approached for photographs at engagements which he attends as secretary-general of NTUC.

After learning about the police investigations and subsequent criminal charges against Su, Ng had no further interactions with him, he said.

Asked to apologise​

Ng said in his statement that he has asked Sng to withdraw his false allegations and to apologise by May 16.

He has also asked Sng to propose an amount of damages, which Ng will donate to charity.

"If he does not do so, I will be compelled to take legal action against Mr Sng to clear my name against these false, misleading, and defamatory allegations," he said.

A few hours earlier, ministers Ong Ye Kung and Chee Hong Tat said that they had sent lawyers' letters to Sng regarding the same Facebook user.

Calling the allegations "baseless and false", the ministers said in a statement issued via their press secretaries that they have also asked Sng to apologise, withdraw the allegations, and pay damages by May 16.

If not, they will take legal action to clear their names and uphold the government's reputation, they said.

王乙康和徐芳达于星期一傍晚，通过他们的新闻秘书发出联合声明，说已经向孙家发发出律师函，指他涉嫌诽谤。

联合文告称，孙家发在脸书发布了两则贴文，指责王乙康和徐芳达明知30亿元洗钱案被告苏海金违法，但纵容苏海金的行为；不诚实地假装不认识苏海金；涉嫌或可能受贿；以及是保护此类罪犯的制度的一分子。
