These taxes also apply to green card holders haha. So many people don’t read the fine print.
I noped out of a US education because of the fine print back in the day.

Smart. My colleague opted out of green card as he read the double taxation fine prints also.

use chatgpt.
Singaporean public universities, like NUS, are significantly less expensive than their US counterparts for both local and international students. A 4-year undergraduate degree at a Singaporean university can cost between $33,000 to $54,000 SGD, while US universities can easily exceed $100,000 USD per year.

give u a little perspective

my 2 rascals are in State University and their fees are like 16K per yr per person

one rascal is graduating this yr , the other another 3 yrs to go - 16K a yr

if they had went to a private or so called ivy , its like 80-100K yr per person .. who the hell can afford , my butt is not itchy .. so i told them State Uni is good enough ..

Sgp still the best .. the fees are cheap ... @cyke69sg would agree

Usually, they need to pay off their uni debt when they start working. Combined with house rentals in the city, is a hell hole.

It is a ploy from the banks lending these "student loans"

The student loans are not merely to pay for college tuition and fees and books.

Can be used for
College tuition and fees
Books and supplies
Dependent care expenses eg babysitter, nanny, daycare for kids
Study abroad
Dining out
Entertainment
Housing expenses
Room and Board
Transportation
Debt
Equipment
New vehicle
Vacations
Car expenses
Groceries
Off-campus housing and utilities
Spring break

What many students do is they start spending like they are already graduated and earning high income in their field eg lawyer engineer doctor

The loans do not need to be paid UNTIL they graduate.

So they rack up the debt big big. Then start working and realize wow I got to pay off all that?

Banks happy to let them spend then later hold them for life.

what is your metrics?

i'm comparing US citizen to US public uni vs SG citizen to SG public uni

  1. SG public uni is between $10k to $20k after subsidy for SC.
  2. US public uni is also between $10k to $20k for their in-state residents.

Oh... They have very heavy federal and state taxes ... So take home pay is much lesser than Singapore. So if the parents take home pay is less, the kids have to take on more study loans. In fact, I'm under the impression many kids pay for their school fees by taking study loans?
No subsidies? In Oz, the govt pay for the students' loan until they graduate and start work. That's when they have to return the loan but I am not sure if there is interest charged. If the student decides to laze and not work, or go overseas for long periods, how on earth is the govt going to ask them to return the loan.

Their education debt is mostly for higher education ones not basic 3-4 years degree kind. Those with large education debt have high paying jobs like doctor for medical schools.

That's why it's a bad thing for them to forgive those loans as those ppl can afford to pay

You need to declare any substantial gift over $19000 a year per person. So max of $38k a year from mum and dad collectively.

This includes all material gifts - pocket money, payment of services in the benefactor’s name etc.

So, yes. You need to declare if your child receives more than $19000 pocket money a year. They have to pay tax on it.
I am sure there is a way around it, no?

Singapore students, mudder and fadder pay. There , most of them take loans to pay.
Here the U is not far away, there the U may be far from home .. so pay for accommodation etc
They are often saddled with 6- figure loans
