The ability to get close to your own kids or rather them going into your lens is where the higher quality of dedicated cameras can shine. Where the catchlight can be seen in their eyes

Other reasons that people do still carry heavier cameras is the ability to create rosy background for portraits which typically requires a larger sensor and lens that can “open bigger”. This is best achieved if u bring them out in the park with good light, nice greenery and flowers behind

So maybe ts need to decide between hp/compacts vs the lightest possible mirrorless if weight/budget can stretch a little

Get something with proper stabilization, high dynamic range and high resolution so experienced folks can help you crops.

This should be good enough if you are more interested in documenting and not spending time learning photography / videography.

Not everyone uses a tripod or lean against something when using camera. Havent chiu seen f up pictures in peoples uploads?

Day time with so much light coming in, shuttle speed can bump higher, if still need stabilization, means having sizure already.

Night time just don't shake so much like pcc. If a camera has good stabilization, it will cost much more, which means the kit lens should have some image stabilization for people with pcc hands. Even if kit lens is cheapo, the inbody stabilization already more than enough.

TS didnt say day time or night time he will be takin pic.

Even indoor shots can benefit from the stabilizations.

Proper gimbal for phone is cheap enough for people who can afford to travel.

You can spend a lot more for features and functions that you will not even touch it. Your money your decision anyway

With that budget or range... go with any one from the Sony RX100 series.

I think ts will be overwhelmed by the tons of options out there. Because I was and still is.

long story short.

1. Ts can consider either a hand phone with at least a wide angle option. Dun expect low light indoor from phones or fast autofocus on tele. Many people seems happy with hp. U will get decent photos

2. if willing to handle some weight. Mirrorless with a zoom and a wide angle lens can work for kids. But it will set you off by 2-3k and weight of 1-2kg (with bags and accessories)

I won’t be sharing my own shots here but just imagine being very close to your kids taking wacky pics. Distortion is fun dun worry about kids. I literally can see my expression in my kids pupil at less than 20cm distance, hand phone won’t get that quality

Long story short, just use phone camera unless you are running for a photography competition or for advertising works.

My photos from 15 years ago on a lousy cheap camera still look damn good now.
