Wanted to snap some photo of my kids for memories, so thought of buying a proper camera

I know some will say HP is good enough, but i just tot of getting something that can snap a better quality photo

any camera expert here to recommend? Mainly taking photo not much videoing

Get handphones with 1 inch camera sensor. The quality with auto AI touch up is super good already.

Depends on what you are looking for.
Need clubsnap old birds like @zoossh and @Sausage to comment .
I’m no old bird. I’m noob like many and less experienced than some here. most importantly im no tech geek and had drop off photography for some time.

That said, I did attempted a few overseas shot entirely on hand phone which is doable but I know what I am missing out.

for portraits I will suggest ts get better cameras if willing to handle the weight and some cost. I will share a litttle more of my limited experience in a next post

I think ts will be overwhelmed by the tons of options out there. Because I was and still is.

long story short.

1. Ts can consider either a hand phone with at least a wide angle option. Dun expect low light indoor from phones or fast autofocus on tele. Many people seems happy with hp. U will get decent photos

2. if willing to handle some weight. Mirrorless with a zoom and a wide angle lens can work for kids. But it will set you off by 2-3k and weight of 1-2kg (with bags and accessories)

I won’t be sharing my own shots here but just imagine being very close to your kids taking wacky pics. Distortion is fun dun worry about kids. I literally can see my expression in my kids pupil at less than 20cm distance, hand phone won’t get that quality

if u are juz looking for selfies and people in front, landscape behind a hp is good enough. a mirrorless or dslr will probably be good if u want
1) blur backgrounds, natural one not ai one
2) shoot people moving in low light (clubs/bars, general night time), esp running kids.....
3) long exposures ( smooth water using tripod)
4) use filters (debatable cos can clip them on phones)........
he shoot kids. tiny size , highly mobile and evasive. no time to jaga all these.

I recommend besides the camera you got a car camera battery so you can protect your main car battery.

I am using a cell link neo. It is very good as it prevents the car camera from draining your battery beyond a certain point.

Am using a vueroid camera (same company as black Vue) . Service very good and everything through the app.

Any purchases will have a triangle between
- cost (can afford but worry overspend)
- versatility/quality
- size/weight

we do not know your expectations, your comfort level of different devices and how much weight and size you are willing to carry on travel

you are likely to see the following big groups of options

1. handphone with different lens
- lightest, fast to switch lens
- great for outdoor with good light
- great/ok for ultrawide angle shots
- slow to change settings but
- you won’t miss moments

2. compacts with fixed lens
- long zoom are versatile eg Sony rx
- prime eg ricoh gr usually street photography
- ok size gd quality ok versatility

3. mirrorless with changeable lens
- single prime / single zoom / 2 lens / 3or more
- cost and weight escalate
- fast to shoot and autofocus if u bring out
- complex combinations
- Sony and fujifilm are among the more popular
- nikon, canon, Olympus m43 are alternatives

4. second hand dslr (outdated)
- same as above
- cheaper but heavier
- autofocus not as good as latest cameras

perhaps better for you to eliminate the groups one by one before asking into specifics

I myself considering getting a sigma 23mm f1.4 as I struggle even with an f1.8 in indoor shades for kids

for every lens it can easily burn close to 1k. It is not uncommon to hit 4-8k once you had several lens. Not sure if ts will go down this hole but im happy with my kids shot… lovely.

most important advice is the best camera is the one u r willing to bring out. I use a combination of one apsc body, 3 lens and one hp nowadays. Extra lens I keep in hotel
