The Nassim Jade scandal back then caused somewhat of a stir, because when it is just after GCT in 1995 mentioned about HDB Prices "Only goes up".

It was at a time, when HDB prices started to rise. Thus Cheng San GRC was closely contested in 1997 GE, as JBJ/TLH took aim at it.

And also, they helped to draw the fire away from Hougang and Potong Pasir allowing both Low Thia Khiang and Chiam See Tong to keep their seats as a stronghold.

Cheo Chai Chen and Ling How Doong (Both SDP) lost their seats, despite PAP aiming all their firepower at Cheng San GRC (and WP as a whole).

They should have managed to keep their seats, if they had managed their constituencies properly. *(CST/CSJ saga also caused a sour taste in people's mouths after CST left SDP as well, though).

SDP really messed up their gains. When you put all these into context, it makes WP seem even more impressive, with how they held onto Aljunied, and even gained more votes in SK.

I send my condolences to the family of Liang Hong. He was my student at the NUS Law School. When I was the Dean of the School, I opened the door for Nantah graduates and talented students from the Chinese stream to study law. He was one of them. He was a good student and we kept in touch after he graduated. When I was the chairman of the National Arts Council, I was asked to mediate a dispute between the chairman and CEO of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Liang Hong was the chairman. After speaking to both of them I came to the conclusion that the only solution was for both of them to resign. I asked Liang Hong, as his old teacher, to sacrifice himself for the sake of peace at NAFA. He agreed and I will always be grateful to him for his understanding and goodwill.

I don't think having closer party ties is necessarily a bad thing. I feel that WP has at times been a little too adversarial to other opposition parties in recent times. The Jalan Kayu incident comes to mind.

At the same time, I don't think it is wrong for them to distance themselves from other parties. Many of the other parties are indeed not as well run, and they certainly don't want to get tarred with the same brush, but there is also no need to be adversarial.

By the time 1997 GE happened, he already in his 60s. Children should be quite old liao, am aware that his wife followed him to Australia afterwards.

Last time WP got attend one, but tiagong Kenneth Jeyaretnam, etc. very uncooperative. Even TCB gave up trying to band the mosquito parties together.

PSP even expelled alot of candidates before GE 2020, and got the famous incident with Kenneth Jeyaretnam on Nee Soon GRC which Sham tried to exploit it to paint it PSP as "Half-Hearted"

But I agree that the likes of SDP, PSP and potentially RDU are worth collaborating with.

Rest of the mosquito parties can forget it, cannot even put ego aside. Even now the PAR also disband liao, with Reform Party leaving recently. Originally supposed to have NSP, PPP and RDU inside also.

SPP is probably the only mosquito party without big ego one, but they really not functioning well. Even Jose Raymond left them eventually.

Of cos I am talking about 1997 time. After LKY death, it seems to get blatant with reserved presidency and then retrospective application of law for Tharman to allow him to be in WEF so it’s a different PA

So performance was quite mixed, but overall not very favourable. They also need to QC their candidates better. I'm not so hopeful regarding their new candidates. Let's see.

I have always been pro opposition, just more moderate so WP appealed more to me.

Reform party did appeal to me when JBJ formed the party but he died soon after so that’s that

Lawrence Pek not young liao, also close to 60. Think they trying to groom Stephanie also, but they need to avoid over-concentration of power though.

Like WP, got Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh as Sect-Gen/Chairman positions + CEC constantly rotate people also. WP is better on this aspect.
