KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — In a historic move, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump signed a deal to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in recognition of growing strategic and multifaceted cooperation between Putrajaya and Washington.

“The elevation of partnership marks a historic advancement in the relations between the two countries, built upon a foundation of diplomatic engagement forged since 1957 and formalised as a Comprehensive Partnership in 2014,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

“The CSP is a testament to the enduring depth of cooperation across strategic areas, particularly in trade and investment, advanced technology, defence and security, energy security, regional peace and stability, and people-to-people ties,” said Wisma Putra after bilateral meetings between both leaders on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits here, today.

The CSP will further solidify Malaysia’s role as a vital and trusted partner of the United States in the Asia Pacific.

The US is among Malaysia’s largest trading partners and most prominent investors. Total trade between the two nations was valued at RM324.91 billion (US$71.39 billion) in 2024.

According to Wisma Putra, both leaders reflected on the historic nature of this inaugural meeting during the US President’s official visit to Malaysia in conjunction with the 13th Asean-United States Summit and the 20th East Asia Summit.

Malaysia is Trump’s first stop on his three-country swing across Asia, which will also include South Korea and Japan. — Bernama

Not as rosy as you think.
Reduce tariff by 6%, Malaysia needs to spend over 160% increase in investment in USA.

Need to spend at least US$50b , unlikely they can commit.
Jhk flip prata than spend 50billions in amdk

I remember during the Asian financial crisis when Anwar was the deputy PM, he wanted to follow USA. It was Mahathir who refused. That's why he got rid of Anwar. Heard from someone.

look at the countries following US (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand) vs those follow CCP (Myanmar, Cambodia, Pakistan, Iran, NK) and you know which is the side of winners.

unless your country is big like India then you don't have to choose sides.

Go look at what Anwar has been doing.

He basically thinks he is a master negotiator and outreach to everyone. Talking to putin, XJP, Donald Trump.

This guy has an egoistic issue, eager to prove that he is very important. But examine his policies and you will realise that he actually negotiates for losing deals, winning nothing.

The latest deal with USA appears on the surface to be a big success for him, or at least that's what the Malaysians are saying. He lowered tariff by 6pct but nobody mentions the detail that it comes with the hefty requirement of almost us$260 billion investments in USA which they likely cannot afford.

On the other hand, when he pulled Malaysia so close to Russia and China, he brought Malaysia into the radar of being a close partner of BRICS which should get a penalty of at least 10pct tariff soon.

In other words, he is like a headless chicken running into wild animals and he tot he is getting friends.

Agreed.

First, King and Anwar go Moscow, Beijing.
Saying x 2.

Then Team USA. Bi-Team China, Russia.

That is realpolitik.

Book worms don't know how to play. Only rely on the Art of Staying Calm. That is stay out, continue monitoring, continue thinking.

I think none of the current deals the world has with US will benefit others other than US itself

Azmin, a former international trade and industry minister, said one of the most damaging clauses of the Malaysia-US Reciprocal Trade Agreement was one which requires Malaysia to copy any US trade restrictions or sanctions against other countries.
