I am planning my house 10GBe infra now, am thinking to get two Asus RT-BE88U (one in living room, one in my room that also happen to be furthest from optical point) to replace Orbi 1st gen. Will do wired backhaul

Good idea or got better options?

I'm using an ASUS GT-BE98.

https://rog.asus.com/sg/networking/rog-rapture-gt-be98-model/

It comes with dual 10G Ports.
1 can be used for WAN
1 can be used for LAN.

Previous router was ASUS AC-5300.

My philosophy is to use a 1 router non-mesh simple setup.
Those ASUS Monster Routers with 8 antennas are more than adequate for providing high speed wifi to every part of the house.

For my current GT-BE98, I am getting wifi speeds of 600 Mbps from bedrooms.
Direct sight wifi speed is 900 Mbps and close to 1 Gbps.

Can it pass by more than 2 walls? If going with this approach, will need a really strong model that can do well with walls cos so far what I am seeing is that I need a mesh setup to overcome those walls

Yes, the router’s wifi signals are strong enough to cross over concrete and wooden doors.

You can also refer to this video review over here.
The reviewer was getting over 600 Mbps WiFi speeds outside his home.
Definitely can penetrate multiple layers of concrete and what not . 😀

Thanks!

Ok guys, I just grabbed the BE98 from SLS just now. Figured that if I wanna upgrade, do it right and get flagship model to test first hahaha

(my wallet crying though)

More importantly, cos it will be the main network hub for the house, I figured better to start with a stronger model that can do routing and switching duties aside from wireless AP before filtering out to the more exotic stuff like those Hasivo 10gbe (ordered one too but for my bedroom) and Topton/CWWK pfSense machines; aka this BE98 can act as my spare for these functions eventually while remaining as the main wirless AP

Good luck!

You won’t regret it man.

I am very confident that, like me, you will never ever need a wifi mesh ever again in your life. :s13:

The feeling I get when I returned to an ASUS-Merlin based router after almost a decade

https://c.tenor.com/dBC9qb2cyxcAAAAd/tenor.gif

And good lord, the GT-BE98 is a beast in many ways. Even my room, separated by two thick concrete walls, can receive 5GHz signals but around 2 to 3 bars instead of full coverage.

Not bad, will keep testing and reporting here

Have to rollback from Merlin to 3.0.0.6.102_39115 (which is what was shipped with my router); sounds like there's quite a bit of improvements from stock firmware that is yet to be in the general release version of Merlin

Also noticed the lack of ability to set AES/TKIP+AES etc for wifi password in Merlin and generally weaker 5GHz performance

EDIT: Ugh, really hope Merlin is updated; the stock ASUS firmware as a router feels too limiting and bloated at the same time to me as a current pfSense user. At least it can work as a router in case I need fallback options and somehow it can get Starhub's IPV6 without issues. Will most probably use this GT-BE98 as a wireless AP while letting the pfSense machine remain for DNSBL/routing duties

The old AX11000 series already can receive connection from 4 floor to the ground floor with it near the window from my experience. :o

UCG Cloud Fibre + U7 Pro XG/XGS, don’t look back liao.
ngl actually I am starting to think this is legit good idea cos those Chinese Topton/CWWK 10Gbe pfSense machine a bit more expensive than UCG Cloud Fiber it seems. Learning a different router OS will be the main challenge I think?

Should I use the BE98 as AP and let UCG Cloud Fiber be the router (and therefore replace the current Sandy Bridge pfSense PC I am using now)?

You can use GNUton's builds, a Merlin fork.

Update from post #1136 regarding the regarding the RT-BE58U.

Setup the 2 sets of V2 as nodes and running since Sat. Did a reboot on 25th Nov around 7am and until now no more reboot nor change settings. So running for more than 3 days straight.

Whole network working well so far, all connected devices are still working. Just that the IoT devices are still steered to the nodes now, maybe the signal stronger.

The reported devices connected to the various network (main/IoT/guest) not very accurate and some devices missing. This is still buggy.

Based on my limited user experience so far for the RT-BE58U, get the A1 version if you can as more stable, at least for me.

When doing the speedtest (under Adaptive QoS, internet speed) can get 2209 DL and 2330 UL in Mbps. Using the V2 as the router, can't get more than 1900Mbps for both DL and UL.

While my NUC 13th Gen i3 WIFI speed is faster now than before (NUC connected to the node via WIFI and node via wired backhaul 1Gbps to router), still less than 400 DL and 500 UL in Mbps (previous less than 200 DL and 400 UL in Mbps, XT8 as router and XD5 as node, wired backhaul). Still cannot figure this one out. Will try to change the WIFI card to the BE200 and test again. Distance is less than 5M, block by a door.

Old NUC 5th Gen i3 with WIFI 5 card in same location with door closed (XT8/XD5 combo) can already easily get more than 400 DL and 400 UL in Mbps. :ROFLMAO:

Overall, when my iPhone 16 Plus is connected to the main router, can get 1800 DL and about 800 UL in Mbps. So it is an upgrade compared to the XT8 as main router.

And this conclude my limited user experience of the RT-BE58U (A1 and V2). Lazy to test anymore...

Can I check if getting Asus mesh from Europe will work in Singapore for the WiFi bands?

Asus Europe version should work nicely in Singapore -- more or less the same as Singapore in terms of WiFi spectrum supported, including lower 6GHz bands.

US version will work as well, but upper 6GHz bands will not be supported, so it is not a good idea to buy top end quad-band WiFi 7 routers like ROG GT-BE98 Pro and Asus ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro from US to be used in Singapore.

China version -- totally no 6GHz band support.

Sian, looks like ultimately I need a satellite unit for my room.

So far only my room will have much significantly weaker wifi even with BE98 cos of how the wifi signals travel through two walls compared to all other rooms

What do you all suggest for an Asus Aimesh satellite unit?

If you can use Ethernet Backhaul, just use a cheap one to serve the room, for example RT-BE58U, below S$100 (or even below S$80) BNIB in Carousell.

If you need to use wireless backhaul, then that is another story, you have to post the floor plan with the details like the planned placement location of the main router and mesh node.
