Statement On The Removal Of Nicolas Maduro
The removal of Nicolas Maduro is a decisive victory for democracy and a rejection of authoritarian rule in Venezuela. Maduro was not a legitimate leader. His grip on power was maintained through two presidential elections widely denounced by international observers, democratic governments, and human rights organisations as fraudulent, unfree, and fundamentally unfair.
These elections were marked by systematic manipulation, the disqualification and persecution of opposition candidates, media censorship, and the abuse of state institutions to entrench personal power. By dismantling electoral integrity and silencing dissent, Maduro stripped the Venezuelan people of their right to choose their leaders and hollowed out the country’s democratic institutions.
Maduro’s removal brings an end to an illegitimate regime that governed without a genuine mandate from the people. It creates a critical opportunity to restore constitutional governance, reestablish the rule of law, and hold truly free, transparent, and competitive elections .Democracy cannot exist without legitimacy, and Venezuela can now begin the long-overdue process of democratic renewal.
