The ironic thing is many boomers have little compassion for the younger generation and think the younger ones have it easier. When everyone is in the same situation regarding job security and cost of living which has spillover effects to marriage/kids.
Younger ones do have it easier than their parents, it is PAP who made it hard for them by opening legnfor foreigners to take the jobs created in Sg, and no longer spend $ to create a supportive env to increase the values of local sinkies.

For me, AMDK means probably FT. Yes, company didnt force him to resign. Toxic AMDK boss did. Because there are no red lines.

MOM should set up red lines. Companies are managed by MOM via Compass.

Compass is a point system for companies to comply with should they want to hire an employment pass holder. There are 6 categories. MOM can set up a 7th to protect older workers above 50. No older workers in company, deduct points.

https://www.mom.gov.sg/passes-and-permits/employment-pass/eligibility

You 2 will reach 50 one day. FTs are freely available and you too will lose your jods to them. It is a matter of when, not if. I hope you are prepared.

Your thread title is very misleading.

Your friend didn't "lose" his job. He quit on his own accord.

Yes, you can say your friend is a victim blah blah blah, but is this your friend's first corporate job? If he has been working for over 30 years and he doesn't even know to navigate his own career, I have nothing to say. He is in 50s with dependants, if he can't even get his priorities over his emotions right, it is no wonder he can be easily pressured to submit.

Your first rodeo too?
You dunno a company can force a staff to leave without using the word "retrenchment"?

I heard from friend saying once a person reach 50, we are being protected by the government for any wrongful termination. Coy cannot anyhow sack us.

So old liao, nv plan ahead?

When getting "forced", can start looking for alternatives liao....

Also, if in dire straits, shd tahan instead of succumbing to pressure/emotion to quit. To buy additional time to find job, instead of expecting external help...

means you must ownself invest and take care of your finances and get ready for retrenchment by 40yrs old to 50yrs old.
then transit to PHV driving career.

pHV should still be good for another few years

It's very dangerous to rely on pHV, I think it's false hope. Betting on sunset industry that is not going to exist in another 5 years is like investing in an idea (investment) that gives 30% negative returns year after year.

I am not sure about that, our boomer aka local context, my Medaka generation parents entered the workforce in 1970s as University of Singaporeโ€™s fresh graduates ๐ŸŽ“ father studied medicine and graduated with distinctions in MBBS degree. Mother was younger and studied law and graduated with FCH in LLB degree. Both were offered multiple good job offers before graduation and had long and illustrious careers until their late 60s before Covid and their voluntary early retirement from the workforce. They had multiple properties and traveling the world, I grew up driven in multiple private cars back then in the 1980s the car parks in SG sure confirm has parking lots and less crowded.
Younger ones do have it easier than their parents, it is PAP who made it hard for them by opening legnfor foreigners to take the jobs created in Sg, and no longer spend $ to create a supportive env to increase the values of local sinkies.
