Star Awards 2026: Why Were All 5 Leads Of Mediacorp Drama I Believe I Can Fly Snubbed From Acting Noms?

The nominees for Star Awards 2026 were announced last Thursday (Feb 26), and as is often the case, several omissions have left netizens lamenting the lack of recognition for certain artistes.

Among those noticeably absent from the acting categories were the five leads of Mediacorp drama I Believe I Can Fly: Thomas Ong, Chen Hanwei, Yao Wenlong, Cavin Soh and Brandon Wong.

The drama, which revolves around the five "uncles" re-evaluating their purposes in life after the sudden death of a former classmate, received wide-praise from viewers, and was also ranked fourth in terms of viewership last year.

The drama, which centres on five longtime friends and “uncles” re-evaluating their lives after the sudden death of a former classmate, was widely praised by viewers. It also ranked fourth in viewership last year.

Given its strong reception, many netizens are now asking: How did none of the five leads receive a single acting nomination for the show?

Hanwei, on the other hand, is nominated for for his performance in

Hanwei, however, did secure a Best Actor nod for his performance in The Gift Of Time.

In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Wenlong shared that he is not particularly disheartened by the outcome.

“For veteran actors like us, having strong ratings and good word-of-mouth is already a great achievement. As for nominations, that depends on fate and the judges," he explained.

That said, Wenlong admitted he felt some disappointment, not for himself, but for his “four brothers”.

"Personally, I’m fine. I’ve never been nominated for Best Actor before, so there’s no such thing as being disappointed or not. I’ll just leave it to fate."

The seasoned actors also saw no need to comfort one another.

“We’ve done our best, so there’s no need to console each other,” Wenlong quipped. “Maybe we’ll tease one another instead.”

Brandon echoed similar sentiments, saying nominations are ultimately beyond their control. He added that the show’s strong ratings and positive reception already reflect the dedication of the production team, and he is grateful that audiences recognised their efforts.

He also expressed hope that Hanwei will clinch his eighth Best Actor trophy this year. “He has the ability to move the judges and earn their vote,” Brandon said.

As for Cavin, he simply thanked viewers for their support.

"Being appreciated and supported by viewers is already the greatest affirmation for the entire team. Congratulations to the show for its three other nominations too," he said.

Despite missing out on Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nods, I Believe I Can Fly is still in the running for Best Supporting Actress (Cynthia Koh), Best Original Theme Song and Best Drama Serial.

Getting the audience's approval is indeed more important

They should stop interviewing the artists being snubbed.
What do the reporters expect the artists to say ?
Very pissed and all the panels are BLIND.
They still need to get assignments from the station and cannot afford to offend the station.

Not nominated mean the management dun recognize them.

They were only using Brandon Wong for propaganda purposes years back for story to tell young actors as a talent retention strategy. Now he's served his purpose, so he's back in the background.

Yao Wenlong got side business, he don't need Mediacorpse.

Chen Hanwei may not be nominated here but he nominated for another show. He's the opposite of being snubbed. He's the one there perpetually even when undeserving.

To be fair Hong Ling is the one who have the most action scenes. Very grueling. Plus she film the show when her mother died. Nomination quite worthy tbh. But no chance of winning. Maybe next year she got stronger chance for the upcoming 至死不渝 airing July

But she acted like childish snall girl in the drama. Sympathy vote maybe but she wont win because of emerald hill. Also the drama she nominated for not everyone know how to watch

Last time chw say want to give younger actor chance, encourage them etc. Now he say what get nominated then cant reject. BS lah.

If he really want to give chance, he would have asked mdc to not put him up for nomination, like XSG and also what LNX did many years ago. He got no guts

After so many awards, dont tell me he dunno when mdc nominate him means he stand a very high chance of winning? He dunno or act blur?

XSG is really he himself turn down nomination or they never nominate him and he say he himself choose not to be nominated to protect Mediacorpse from backlash. Haha...

Desmond Tan really is... He filming Devil Behind The Gate acting two characters (twins), but he never realized that while filming the show Doreen and Ivy were in meetings with executives setting show up for buzzless obscurity. Tbh what type of 15-episode short drama need 9 months of post production timing? Somemore air after Emerald Hill. So obvious is set up. The former employee only confirmed any suspicions I had that the zero buzz was set up.

But what Doreen and Ivy got wrong is they thought Devil Behind The Gate fail than people will say Sheryl Ang can't be lead or carry shows. Devil Behind The Gate was Desmond Tan's show. If it fails most people out there would see it as Desmond Tan's failure, not Sheryl's.

Plus Christopher Lee does not get bribed by their awards. He has golden bells. They try to buy him in but he still like comment that asks him to help ppl enter China and Taiwan cos Mediacorp small, he still never come back for them.
