I think it's weird too, but can't really explain it properly because I'm out of touch with Japanese grammar.
If I were to say it I would say something like:
上手ですね、日本語。

It's strange to have,
あんたは上手ですね、日本語は。
The two wa particles seem incorrect (?)

Maybe you should check with your Japanese teacher? I mess up on the simple stuff especially since I've not spoken standard Japanese for a while and all I've been getting as input is casual Japanese from Anime.

So the correct sentence would be

まあ。。the correct way of saying would be Niaosanさんの日本語が上手ですね。。。

yah, think if the listener understands without much difficulty and the Japanese accent of the non-native speaker is good.

Nope, i recently graduated from Uni so taking a break from Japanese study...

I study Jap since poly days and can say i am a bit below JLPT 2 standard but do not have any papers.
My Jap friends advised me to get certification so i took my JLPT 4 last year.

The next step is to embark from scratch again in 2009 (to refresh my memory) and apply for JLPT 3.

I totally agree that what's most important is that both speakers understand each other, however I still stick to my opinion that the original sentence is weird, and Dimitri's later correction of the "ga" ending is correct.

I did a bit of research and here's some very good explanations and examples of how the two particles should be used

In this case, Nihongo is the subject so it should be followed by "ga" which is the subject marker. Wa is never the subject marker. It would be nice if someone would be able to confirm this with his/her sensei.

Sorry, I would have been in a position to better analyse Japanese when I was still studying it actively 2 years ago but now I drop particles subconsciously until I get confused. I'll be going to Japan at the end of the year for a month to study the language... hopefully I'll be able to pick it up again.

I just found an online explanation of wa and ga from a book.

It's has a very very good explanation on the imo the 2 most confusing particles in Japanese grammar See page 31 onwards. Amazon prevents you from reading more than 3-5 pages usually but if you play around with the search function, you should eventually be able to read the whole chapter. I'm still reading it and it's very enlightening

lol, terraj-kun does that mean i'm wrong all these years ?

maa~ from my usage in compositions and letter writing practices, i'm not marked wrong for this, even in my senior levels. this was what i'm taught and like i said, i'm not getting marked for this. so i feel its really okay. but if anyone who feels that this is so damn wrong, you are welcome to correct me. i'm will delete off that post.

and i didn't say dimitri-san is wrong. he is correct in using "ga" but the meaning changes. that's all i'm saying. i didn't type those long stuff and explanation for some crack-pot con stories to insult people.

anyway, thanks for the links. very beneficial to readers of thread. this sure clears up the problem now.
