iirc they actually showed off telephony functions on the 8.9 and 10.1 Tabs. Whether it will come in the final 3G versions I dunno, but it was shown off.Agree too!
There's no way the 7 inch can be dumped by the 10.1..
the biggest advantage of the 7 inch Tab is the combination between tablet and phone..
10.1 is a full fledge tablet.. because Honeycomb (Android 3.0) does not support 3G/GSM networks.. just like iPad is not iPhone, even though they're iOS..
unless anyone would want both a mobile phone and a tablet to carry around, getting the 10.1 will be a good choice to complement the phone.. but then again it becomes an unnecessity.. because it's a "want" not a "necessary", as the phone can pretty do as much as a tablet with a smaller screen anyway..
anyway I would prefer the Tab 7 inch to stay with Android 2.3 and not upgraded to Android 3.0 Honeycomb because I still want to use it as a phone.. cos no point re-invest in another gadget that does the same thing.. unless of course when Google says Honeycomb supports 3G/GSM, then I'd hope Samsung will push Honeycomb to Tab..
btw Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) will be a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so it will be the first full native support from Google to have a combination of Tablet and Phone.. by then (late 2011 when Android 4.0 is released), I believe Tab 7" might stand a good chance to be upgraded again.. even if Samsung doesn't support anymore, the Open Source community will definitely do something about it..
Wow kudos to samsung to add the phone function to Honeycomb.. Its natively not supported by Google, but Samsung shown it.. Hope they'll make the 3G/GSM function an official release and not a prototype demonstration only..Ah..here!
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 comes to the office, makes calls
Size should be the main concern here, not telephony functions.![]()
Yes, I like your optimism, but I'm just stating my opinions based on what I've observed from what the devs have been able to achieve on Samsung devices. Imho it's gonna take a hell of a long time, possibly even never for any form of a truly custom rom beyond HC. Just look at the slow as molasses progress of CM7 for the Tab.Wow kudos to samsung to add the phone function to Honeycomb.. Its natively not supported by Google, but Samsung shown it.. Hope they'll make the 3G/GSM function an official release and not a prototype demonstration only..
I believe ice cream sandwich is possible on Tab 7" because its a combination of Honeycomb and Gingerbread.. That means it may likely not require Tegra or multicore processors to run as necessarily as Honeycomb's requirement. Don't forget Google wouldn't leave behind phones of lesser/weaker hardware specs.. The hybrid os will cover across many types of hardware to reduce Android's fragmentation. Tab 7" has pretty good specs.. That's why I believe it's possible..
You can also look on previous Android's trend. I upgraded my HTC G1 from Cupcake 1.5, to Donut 1.6, to Eclair 2.0, to Froyo 2.2.. That's 4 versions of upgrades on an old and low spec hardware! To think that Tab 7" will just die on Froyo, then to Gingerbread, is definitely unlikely considering the good hardware spec.. It can be stretched to the limits, just like the G1.. The Open Source Community will make that possible!
