my initial review on the unit

unit comes with firmware 2.0.1

get your fw upgrade from: http://www.engeniustech.com.sg/support

Pros:

cheap
a monitor to gauge load
friendly wizard page for beginners
despite having a settings that requires constant reboot, the unit reboot pretty quick (15s)
rebooting of router (for settings update) will not cause internet to go down
setup is easy and quick
nice remote administration login page for iPhone.

Cons:

router needs to be reset for every changes
wireless unable to select G+N only
configuration page not as comprehensive as Dlink products

The firmware is really 2.0.1 ah? But why is it displaying 2.1.0?

Btw, should I enable Jumbo Frames? If so, what frame size is appropriate?

This exhibition batch of ESR-9850 come with 2.1.0

this firmware is not out on their website yet. I called and checked.

This new firmware has 2 or 3 new stuff which is not needed for me.

I brought 3 units as presents for friend to give away as presents.

I got the NTUC voucher from my purchase

Yesterday just got the ESR 9850
Strange thing is the firmware

Kernel version 2.1.0
Application version 2.1.0

It is Version 2.1.0 which i think is not out in the Internet right?

Oh ya i paid for $99 and got the NTUC $10 Voucher

there is wake-up-on-lan for firmware 2.1.0. I saw it in the UI.

please go to tools.

Managed to get the router at $79 during the Hourly Special Promo.

The staff told me that only 5 routers would be sold at each booth, but the booth that I went to didn't really have other people buying the router. Dunno about other booths though. :o

But alas! The router doesn't support scheduled wake-on-lan, unlike in Tomato firmware! :(
No choice then, I'll have to keep one PC on to run Scheduled Tasks to issue out wake-on-lan.

Yes there is WakeOnLAN on that page, but the problem with it is that it's for "on demand" use only. I wish to have scheduled task that can run WakeOnLAN at certain times. :o

ONT -> Huawei Voice Home Gateway HG256s (FW v.22) -> D-Link DHP-W306AV (FW v.101) -> D-Link DHP-306AV (FW v.101) -> EnGenius ESR9850 (FW v2.1.0) Wireless (2.4GHz / 300Mbps)

The ping is kinda bad with this setup but acceptable for me.

Router is @ living room.

Test notebook is @ 1 bedroom away

Proud owner of a Dlink 655 since 2009, and recently with the purchased of the new Apple TV2, i realize that the quality of video streaming is poor whilst the signal range is decent. I actually compared it with the Aztech 3G mobile router HW533 which provided good streaming with poor range.

Just wondering if getting this EnGenius is gonna help me solve my issue.
:o

Any advise?

From my field of work understanding, i can safely say that it's impossible, or rather impractical, for any electronic products to be sold at a lost, other than end cycle aka EOL products. :o

aiyo kiwi didnt know u went queue for it, shld have asked u help me get 1 too haha

Definitely possible

Like the M1 50Mbps plan, with a gross profit margin of only $9, not NET.
That means haven include cost like electricity, staff etc...
