when you rent houses or places, know your rights as tenants. your bond MUST be submitted to the RTA instead of being held by your landlord. read the fine print carefully, there is some penalties involved if you break lease or end your tenancy early, but usually, as tenants, you need only to give 2 weeks notice to your landlord, but the landlord must give you 2 month notice. Note the stark difference.

if there is any problems with the rented property, you need to raise a form 11B to your landlord and demand the item to be fixed, that can range from leaking taps to faulty door.

before you enter the rented property, you need to do a condition entry report. Find whatever faults that you can find and note it down. If you dont do it, the landlord can fault you for the spoilage/defect and will deduct from your bond.

if you any problem with rental, please call www.rta.org.au.

and remember, dont let people knock on your carrot heads.

Parking in Uni need to pay, and are quite far from the main campus. The one behind IT and Engineering is 3 bucks per day, the one behind BSL is 5 bucks a day, IIRC.

Both are multi storey carparks. There are parking @ UQ centre as well, but i'm not sure of the price. Lots are also available along the river i think.

No point driving there if you are going to school late. You will be spending hours just to look for a parking space. The one along the river cost 3 dollars a day from morning to 9pm and people who usually park there, get there around 7am and park there all the way till 6.

The ones in school compound are more expensive. around $1.5 an hours to 3 dollars. Paying by credit card has to be $3 dollars. So get more loose change.

Last time i used to buy bank drafts if bringing over money to pay for school fees and all. The pay2home looks good though, with a lower admin fee, and the exchange rate also looks quite competitive.

looking for accommodation

Hi hardwarezoners:)

I'm entering UQ this yr for july intake. Am looking for accomodation now.
I know that there are options for residential college, renting off campus, or other student units like unilodge.

I decided not to go for residential college because I heard need 2 referees for to apply which I don't know who can help me to be my referee and another reason is I heard the colleges are quite noisy also.

Also, I know renting is the cheapest option but I feel uneasy with this option because it cannot be prebooked.

Therefore now I am focusing on finding student units. I looked up unilodge which IDP recommend but find the price too high. From the uq website about option for long term accommodation off campus, there are other places like urbanest, altitude apts, the pad student accommodation. My budget is about AUD$250 per mth. Wonder if anyone know about these places i mention or stay there before / can recommend other good student units that can prebook? I will greatly appreciate any information or reviews, thank you :)

the rent is counted here by per week, 250 per month is impossible. but 250/week there is lots of option, if u dont mind the trouble can try myaus, thepad, altitude or even homehound.com.au to do the searching yourself. Staying at unilodge is good because u can walk home to sch and walk home to rest in between lecture but the rental is high. stay somewhere far u might even save enough to buy a car and drive to sch. bus fare here is max $18/week student concession unless u stay 10km.

Looking for someone to stay in International House

Hi all!

I'm currently looking for someone to take over my contract at International House for Semester 2, 7th July - 17 November; total fees of $8675.

All 3 meals will be catered for everyday. Buffet-style, eat until you are bloated for every meal! Salad bar (like Subway) for lunch and dinner, coupled with different main dishes each day. Lamb steak chicken pork. Sometimes there's BBQ food with kangaroo sausage! And for dinner there's desserts which I look forward to every night! Chocolate bread pudding is the best :))) There's also caramel slice, apple/berry crumble, fruit flapjack, ice cream etc etc. We have fruits too; apples, bananas, pear, oranges, watermelons and melons.

Weekly room cleaning service with a change of bed sheets provided. Daily cleaning of toilet which is shared with 3 floormates (there's only 4 people living on my floor, including me). You get a room to yourself with a bed, wardrobe, studying desk with corkboard, drawers and shelves.

It's true that they have many parties here and it could get noisy - but for the particular room I'm staying in, it's always quiet! ;) My friends who find it noisy go to the Biological Sciences Library in UQ - that's the nearest library - open 24/7 and just 5 minutes walk away.

And it's really convenient to stay on-campus! I could finish my lunch at 12.55pm and just run to attend my lesson at 1pm. This is so amazing to me because in Singapore I had always taken an hour to travel to school. International House is also just a 5-minutes walk away from the nearest bus stop that can take you to Toowong and Brisbane Central. 10-15 minutes away from Hawken Drive which has IGA supermarket for you to buy snacks and chocolates! ^^

The best thing about staying here is getting to meet many people! Yep there's a lot of Asians here - plenty of Singaporeans! HK, Koreans (go gaga if you are kpop fan), Japanese, Malaysians. But more than 50% of the residents are still ang-mohs: locals and people from UK, US + a few from Italy, Russia, etc. If you want to make friends from all over the world then coming to IH will make it very easy for you ;)

Making new friends when you just come here is really important! During my first week here, I was so occupied with participating in the O-week activites to make more more friends + exploring the area with the new friends made + settling in - mobile plans, bank accounts, enrolment etc; no time and energy to be homesick at all! It could be really hard to make new friends if you are staying outside. Then you would end up being bored with nothing to do other than the boring settling in stuffs (alone), then you'd start missing home and becoming emo. Haha making friends and not becoming homesick when I just came here must be the best thing about staying at IH! :D

Main reason I wanna move out is due to the cost - you're really paying for the convenience of having everything done for you - food and cleaning, plus the joy of preparing to go out 15 minutes before class and still not be late :) :) I have met great people here and decided it's time for me to go experience some independent living together with them! :p

Since most people have signed on for a year-long contract (because they give preference to people who apply to stay for a year), it could be hard to get a place in the second semester. So if you want to secure your place in college (and avoid wasting the expensive application fees), wanna stay just for one semester to experience college life for fun (YOLO!), come take over my contract!

I'm not sure what other information to provide, just ask me if you have any questions/require other details! :) Contact me at ureshikatta-@hotmail or PM me~ I will try to check this thread often too.

Thanks! =)
