Ferguson ready to spend big

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he would be willing to spend big if it meant luring the right man to Manchester United this summer.

After years of hunting for value in the market, United broke their own rules last summer by splashing out £24million on a 29-year-old with minimal resale value who had only one year left on his contract.

Yet the arrival of Robin van Persie proved to be the masterstroke which allowed United to reclaim their Barclays Premier League title.

Ferguson estimates he only needs a couple of players to freshen up his squad this summer.

However, with rumours of potential bids for Robert Lewandowski and Radamel Falcao still circulating, despite obvious interest from Bayern Munich and Chelsea respectively, Ferguson insists he has the funds to make another marquee purchase.

"I don't think we need to rebuild at all," said Ferguson. "We possibly need two players. It depends. If a player came along who met our criteria we would push the boat out and get him, irrespective of how many players we have."

It is bad news for United's domestic rivals given they are already well behind, but such an easy stroll to championship glory cannot be anticipated next term, with Manchester City sure to strengthen and Ferguson expecting a renewed threat from Chelsea, especially if the Special One returns.

"Chelsea will definitely be involved next year," said Ferguson. "They have some good players and it looks likely (Jose) Mourinho will be going there."

It would not be Ferguson's way to rest on his laurels, of course.

Planning for a 14th league title has already begun and the trophy for the 13th has not been collected yet.

This is where United's mighty commercial muscle is paying off.

United have done so many deals recently, most are greeted with a snigger given the unknown significance of companies such as gloops, who were confirmed as their social gaming partner yesterday.

But the cash is regenerated, with some paying off the club's reduced - but still enormous - debts, and the rest filtering into Ferguson's transfer kitty.

"It does trickle down," said Ferguson. "Having spoken with the Glazer family, there is every intention to kick on.

"You have to credit the commercial people. They have done a great job.

"Of course the football team has been the platform for it but they are capitalising on such a great profile for the club.

"There is no doubt, worldwide, it seems to be getting bigger."

United head to Arsenal on Sunday still with the aim of reaching Chelsea's Premier League points record of 95 points, which they would eclipse by winning their remaining four games.

It is those little targets that allow Ferguson to attain so many big ones, and ensure he is never short of an incentive to drive his players with.

"I said last week I don't mind winning the league in the last game of the season," he said. "Now we have won the league with four games left, I look at it as being one thing to win the league, another to do it by beating the record.

"Ninety-six points would be phenomenal. I don't know if that could ever be beaten."

It also seems Ferguson's team selection will not be influenced by kindness.

Anders Lindegaard for instance still requires two more appearances to reach the 10 previously viewed as the minimum requirement to qualify for a medal.

It seems such restrictions no longer apply, which is good news for both Alexander Buttner and Darren Fletcher, who is still trying to overcome a chronic bowel complaint that required surgery which ruled him out for the season.

"They will get medals," said Ferguson. "The system has changed now. They give you an allocated number of medals now which you can distribute the way you want.

"That is fair because it is only injury that has prevented Darren Fletcher from getting a medal.

"Buttner has been involved in every away game and every training session and it is very difficult for a goalkeeper to get 10 medals when your first choice goalkeeper has performed the way (David) De Gea has.

"He deserves his medal too."

AVB reveals Bale guarantee

Andre Villas-Boas says he has been told Gareth Bale will stay at Tottenham if the club reach the Champions League.

Spurs will be guaranteed a top-four finish and a return to Europe's elite competition if they win their remaining five Premier League games.

And, according to Villas-Boas, PFA Player of the Year contender Bale will resist offers from elsewhere if Champions League football is on offer at White Hart Lane.

"That's the information that I have from the club," the Tottenham manager said.

"The club is committed to keeping the best assets. That's the only way that we

can ensure that we are in the top four every year.

"Gareth is part of that project bearing in mind that he has been amazing this season. Hopefully we can develop him to a greater extent."

Bale signed a new long-term contract last summer, and recent newspaper reports claimed it would take a fee in excess of football's £80m transfer record to persuade Spurs to sell.

keyword is top four finish.
no guarantee spurs will be top 4.

and AVB is not the board, i suspect anyone offering 45-50m should be enough top prise him away, provided Bale is interested in the move :o

Which one fap you more? No option of both haha.

Bale or Ronaldo?

I will go for Bale, younger and his ability and style seems to gel and complement well with the current team of Man Utd..

Sir Alex: Squad Reds get medals

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his intention to give medals to every player who has contributed to this season’s Barclays Premier League title success.

The Reds boss is happy that the Premier League have relaxed their rule to allow league-winning clubs to reward more squad members with medals.

Previously only those who had made 10 or more league appearances were eligible and clubs were required to apply for extra medals for players who had not reached that tally. But now five appearances is the requirement and United will receive 40 medals, 10 more than before.

And Sir Alex confirmed: "They [the fringe players] will get medals. It’s changed now. They give you an allocated number of medals and it’s up to you to distribute them how you want.

"I think that’s fair because, in Darren Fletcher’s case for instance, it’s only illness which has prohibited him from getting a medal [under the old 10 appearances rule]. I’m sure if he’d been available he would have been sitting here with one.

"[Alexander] Büttner’s been great because he’s travelled to every away game with us, he’s been involved in every single training session, he’s played three times and been a substitute another 10 times, something like that. So I think that’s a contribution.

"It’s very difficult for a goalkeeper to get the 10 appearances when your first-choice goalkeeper is performing the way David De Gea has. So I think Anders Lindegaard deserves his medal too. We’ll distribute the way we think is fair."

Nice gesture, Gaffer!! If I am the fringe workers of the company to get such recognition...will work extra hard for the next financial year..surely..

Papers: Pole position?

Lewandowski to snub Bayern for United
Robert Lewandowski is willing to snub Bayern Munich to land a dream move to Manchester United this summer. The Poland and Borussia Dortmund striker is one of the hottest properties in Europe and enhanced his reputation with a four-goal salvo against Real Madrid on Wednesday. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking the 24-year-old since last summer, as Starsport exclusively revealed. Fergie sent scouts to watch him again this week as Lewandowski ripped Real apart in the first leg of the Champion League semi-final in Dortmund. Lewandowski, who has no get-out clause in his current contract, has refused to sign a new deal with the German champions and has agreed a deal in principle with Bayern. But it is understood Dortmund bosses are loathe to let him join their main rivals so soon after allowing Mario Gotze to join Bayern in a £31m deal. Gotze has become a pariah with Dortmund fans and Lewandowski fears similar treatment if he follows his team-mate to the Allianz Arena. He has told friends his heart is set on coming to the Premier League and that United are his No.1 choice ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea.

Plenty of other papers comment on the Lewandowski rumours today including The Sun, whose writers Neil Custis and Antony Kastrinaiks have combined to claim the Reds “must put together a £38million package to land the Polish ace”. Meanwhile, The Telegraph also features a quote from the striker’s agent, Maik Barthel, who says: “We have reached an agreement with a club and intend [him] to move this summer.”

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail speculates that Rio Ferdinand will be named in the PFA team of the year, which will be announced on Sunday evening.

Papers: Lewandowski's United dream - Official Manchester United Website

Mixed feelings, I am craving for a CM...and will accept a prolific forward as well..

Ferguson an inspiration, Moyes says

Everton manager David Moyes believes that Sir Alex Ferguson is an inspiration to any manager looking to have a long career.

David Moyes has been impressed by Sir Alex Ferguson's longevity
Manchester United boss Ferguson and Arsenal's Arsene Wenger are the only two managers in English football to have been in charge of their current club longer than Moyes, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Thursday.

Moyes is uncertain as to whether he will still be managing when he is 71, as Ferguson is, and his long-term future at Goodison Park remains unresolved, with his contract due to expire in the summer and no new deal signed.

But Moyes has indicated that his enthusiasm for management is still strong after 15 years as a boss – the first four at Preston and the last 11 at Everton.

Asked if he would want to be in charge of a club at Ferguson's age, Moyes answered: "I think I would. Will I be able to? I don't know. He might be a one-off, Sir Alex. He's got battery that goes and goes, by the look of it.

"I don't know if I could go that long, but I do think that people in this world are now having to work longer, and are fitter and more healthy to do so. Sir Alex certainly is. So we all have to try to follow his lead and see if we can keep up with him."

Moyes believes that keeping himself fit is key to ensuring he can handle the demands of marshalling his players on the training ground.

He added: "Well, I'm trying to keep fit all the time, because it's a young sport, and I do believe that you have to try to be in the right physical condition to work on the training ground, and be around the players as much as you can.

"But it gets harder. I'm not in the same condition as I was when I left Preston. I could probably have kept playing for a bit longer if I'd wanted to, but my choice was to go into management."

Addressing a room full of journalists at a press conference on Friday, he added: "It's not easy as you get older, as most of you gents looking at me will know. You're all looking a bit older yourselves. You look as if you could do with a bit of extra training. But I try to do the best I can."

What more can I say?? At the age of 71, either I have kick the bucket or rotting in my bedroom.

Same here.. Similar to Benzema this kind of player. Technical, clinical and more mobile than RVP. Will give us another goal threat in the 6 yard box when RVP is busy taking corners :s13:
