Hi all, I use asus laptop U31SD and facing a problem after trying to reformat the hdd and fail to do so on the last stage on the last disk with a error code 1029. Went to the service centre but they just telling me maybe hdd or recovery disk problem without any explanation what the error code message means. :s22: Just telling me it will cost me $60 odd for an inspection and my warranty is just out by 2 weeks. After googling this error code, many are facing very same problem and even with purchased recovery disks.

At the moment, my last resort is to buy a new OS and do a clean install and hope this will solve the problem.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What OS does this laptop come with?

One thing bad about Asus laptop there is no diagnostic software available whether built-in or downloadable from their site.

Why reformat in the first place? I often use system restore when something is wrong. I always recommend buying extended warranty as anytime any thing may happen.

Even have also no use as it die off while reformatting. The system could not booth and no way to use diagnostic software. Windows do have diagnostic software. Can always use PC Doctor diagnostic software. Buy sdd with new os will solve the issue. He may have reformat the whole notebook including the os files so now the sdd is empty without anything just like an external sdd. Some notebook like HP do allow the reformating of hard disk without touching the os. Always consult technical support on how to reformat without touching the os. When I sold my old notebook I used a file shredder to shred away all my files after I have back up. I also create my recovery disk. Buying a recovery disk from ASUS can solve the issue.

Don't you know that some laptop like Dell for example come with diagnostic software in their ROM which allow booting directly from it much like a live CD/DVD! Without doing proper diagnosis on the system, one cannot be sure that TS's problem lies with the HDD.

And as pointed out by TS, there are problem with Asus purchased recovery disk.

Not for ASUS. I can create a booth disk and set the bio to allow booth from CD and I can use PC Doctor CD.

Thank you for your replies. I will reply in order of replies.

AL - using Win 7 HP

HN - prefer to do a clean install than just restoring it. Googling didn't help to find the answer for the problem I am facing.

Y01 - when my screen was replaced under warranty last year, I asked about replacing hdd with ssd. You won't believe what the answer was - ssd won't work :s22:

I have 2 options as Y01 suggested. I will buy a new ssd or hdd and try to reinstall the recovery disk, if works means my current hdd is corrupted. If this fails, then have to buy new OS (tossing between 7 & 8).

I will update you with the outcomes.

I think hdd is corrupted. If Buying os + ssd can be quite expensive, add a bit more $ can get a new notebook.

throw away the recovery disk
the old original hdd can use it as external hdd. the recovery partition inside will occupy a few gb of space, its up to u if u want to delete it
get your own copy of w7 and the the laptop drivers and install it on ssd

then install acronis or norton ghost and make a ghost image, which will be about 2 to 3gb. nowadays ghost image is called "recovery point"

then get a cheap thumbdrive eg 8gb, use power-iso and make it as a acronis/norton ghost bootable usb drive

then keep the ghost image in that thumbdrive.

back when u originally bought the laptop, did u leave the hdd that came inside the laptop as it is, and used it as straight as it is? or did u take it out, leave it aside (stored in a cool dry place) and put in your own hdd and installed your own OS? the preferred method is to take it out and leave it aside and simply use it back (ie without any need to format) when u need to sell the laptop or send it to repair.

Thank you for your suggestion, any recommendation for particular brand of ssd? Most likely I will get 128gb if I am taking this path.

That why I'm making noise, at least with Dell laptop I can confirm the actual fault without the need to look for other diagnostic software. LOL, even their so-called recovery partition for laptop running Win8 don't provide option to create recovery disk.

TS, if cost is an issue just purchase a normal Sata HDD if it's indeed drive fault. Also there is no need to purchase another OS just look for the correct Windows media disc since your laptop already got the legal COA license. After which do a clean install either from DVD or USB thumb drive, forget about the recovery partition.
