You mean that other guys don't wear ties? Not so much being told that you shouldn't wear a tie, right? You know, there was smth a friend told me: 'If people look at you, give you weird stares, or ask why you're wearing a tie, no sweat, just tell them this is your style. Sooner or later, they'll just get used to it. Better to be true to your style (and self) than otherwise.'

Nah my also American educated and experienced boss told me "you can lose the tie," which is American for "don't wear tie."

He probably thought that you didn't know about the company culture and was under the impression that wearing a tie is necessary, rather than optional. I'd have joked and said smth like 'Must I really? Helps me perform better on the job'.

Berg & Berg (they call it purple, but I think it's more Fuchsia) cotton knit tie
Linen chambray shirt (I'm an addict to this mottled fabric that I have three lengths of fabrics all of which have very very very minor variance in colour). This is from RSK. A couple I have are from my tailor, and from Italy.
