Can I just book one room for 4 person and when I register I just put 2 adults? Because my 2 kids are small (<5 yr old) and they usually share the bed with us.

possible as your kids are still small.
get a deluxe room to everyone would be more comfortable.
better check on size of the bed. uncomfortable to squeeze into a queen sized bed

hotel act and law is that everyone has to be registered. where are you booking from?? if online just put 2 adults 2 child and register everyone upon check in you be fine with 1 room.

3-5 stars hotels in thailand usually count by beds. a default dbl bed room can sleep 1 or 2 adults at d same price. if u add in a 3rd person, they wld assume u need a 3rd bed, dis increases d charge. also note dat not all dbl rm can add in a 3rd bed. u've 2 state in ur booking, so dat d hotel can make necessary arrangement prior 2 ur arrival.

Have not booked yet. But everytime I put in 2 children the price will jump. Quite a sum as I need 5night stay

I booked many hotels in Asia so far and always put 2 adults. I didn't bother to indicate children cos my children are sharing with us on existing beds, without any extra bed.

Usually they will close one eyes if with children under 12. The most they will bill you extra for the children breakfast if you consume.

So far I have no problem with Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau and etc.

Only Australia i went they are particular.

Oh forget to tell your that baby cot is usually free, you can request for one.

Ask for King bed or twin beds so that 4 of you (2A2C) can sleep comfortably. Push the twin beds together.

Queen bed is too small for 2A2C.

Possible. I always put 2 adults when booking and choose Twin Beded so can combined the beds together. If can get the deluxe room. Check out hotel reviews for photos on bed configuration before booking as some hotel twin bed is really single bed, not super twin.

Reason of your 3 pax when you key in is due to the extra bed that the system captured as a 3rd person irregardless of age, they just take it as Triple room. So just put 2 pax in a room to avoid extra cost. Upon check-in just show 1 child passport since sharing same bed which I always do.

Happy booking!

You can also book family room. Got 2 queen size bed. Is better :)
