Can't setup internet connection

Hi,

Got a new Asus RT-AC68U at CEE and tried to set it up with my SingTel 300 Mbps fibre, using a Sony Vaio Pro Ultrabook wireless connection (no Ethernet/LAN socket). Was told by the SingTel technician who activated my fibre 3 weeks ago (with a Aztech 7002) that I could plug in any other router just into the SingTel modem and follow the instructions for setting it up.

The Asus router came with firmware version 207 which I upgraded to 306 after I saw that the problems with wireless quick internet setup were fixed in version 291 (assuming this fix was also included in 306). No problem to change firmware to latest version.

Followed all the other instructions (no proxy settings, automatic DNS, etc) and connected router to the SingTel modem. It couldn't detect any internet signal and directed me automatically to the "quick internet setup". Using the default settings on each screens the router was unable to connect because it didn't find the DNS settings. Followed on-screen advice to shut down modem, wait 2 min, and try again while the router was rebooting. Unfortunately without any success.

Tried the internet setup also on my iPad and experienced same problem.

Could any of the experienced IT experts in this forum advise the following:
(1) Does this router work on SingTel fibre, using the SingTel modem?
(2) Has anyone experienced similar problems, and if so, how could they be fixed?
(3) Are there any specific settings that I have to select and enter manually during the "quick internet setup"?

Called Asus on Thursday, explaining the problem, but so far they have not reverted back to me. I don't have any computer with Ethernet/Lan socket, only mobile devices and the Ultrabook.

Would consider myself inexperienced in such technical issues, so truly appreciate any advice.

asus router is priced exorbitantly, therefore it must be able to deliver matching it's price.

Forget what the technician told you, ditch your aztech 7002 and connect directly from your ONT to your asus router. it will work after you completed the set up.

If you have messed with the settings before, do a reset and boot up all equipments sequentially. It should work now.

took the plunge and bought the ac68u at challenger.
easy switch from the n56... the wizard was a bit confusing as it prompted to get connections from the isp (singtel-fibre) but I had to get to the custom setting - Singtel-Others, as I wanted to plug directly to the ONT and don't have digital line, MIOTV plugged to Lan4)

2.4GHz range and coverage definitely better compared to N56U using my samsung devices - galaxy s4 and note 10.1 (2014).

On 5ghz the note 10.1 shows as "not in range" while the Galaxys4 shows 75% strength. What gives?

Has exactly same problem with SingTel.
Apologies for naïve question: How did you directly connect from ONT to your Asus router?
The socket at ONT is round, not the usual LAN type. The cable used by SingTel to connect from ONT to SingTel modem has this round type plug on both ends, so I can't connect it straight from ONT to the Asus router.

One more question: How did you get to the custom setting on the GUI, and what settings did you use for "SingTel-Others"?

use wireless ac, report your speeds...
both your S4 and Note 10.1 support it :s13:

yes i know, just trying to sort out the kinks. hence didn't mention my ipad which is not ac.

speaking of which, updated firmware with the latest one from the asus site and now i can't login back to the router, got this message about "settings have changed" and I have to "log on to wireless network to" view the changes or something :s11:

press and hold the reset button, the power light blinks but the rest of the lights also blinking as if normal. my miotv can watch, only my pc can't get back into admin console.

got football to watch, so N56U restored to active duty.

tomorrow rollback to 205, if i can get back to admin console.

No problem with the last 2 firmware doing torrent on

Mac, wireless
Mac, wired
NAS, wired
NAS, wired

All 3 ports from SingTel presets used

That said, multiple clients doing concurrent torrent on the poor yet beastly AC68.

Except that the router, despite rebooting daily, sometimes only allow my Mac to negate at 150mbps max instead of the 450mbps on wireless N 5G, need to reboot to negate at max speed.

ugh ...

after plugging in the ac68 it allows me to login but not long enough to roll back firmware before it crashes again...

does challenger do a 1-for-1 exchange?

Hi,
I have the same problem as "Clauswu" in that after set-up couldn't detect any internet signal. I have tried your method and did a reset on the AC66U, redo the set-up but still unsuccessful. Is there any way to determine whether is it hardware or software problem?

use firmware restoration to roll back? it works for me everytime a newer firmware goes crazy.

btw using merlin latest build 3.0.0.4.374.34_2. its stable. even with torrent running.

Contacted SingTel today and was clearly told that with the recently installed ONTs one cannot bypass the Aztech modem/router and directly connect other routers (like the Asus) to the ONT. Only way to use the Asus is after the Aztech, i.e. using Aztech as bridge. For such set-up, DHCP has to be disabled on the Asus. This way you can test if there is any fault with the machine (mine worked fine).

However, such set-up doesn't make much sense (especially if both routers are positioned next to each other) because whatever signal comes out of the Asus can only be slower/less than what goes into it after passing through Aztech.

Would really be nice to know if anyone has managed to bypass this "lock-in to SingTel".

u can update to the newer firmware. but also download 205 too if newer one is unstable for u.

if there isnt any problem, u can choose to stick to 158.

confirming for me that the torrents are causing the problems. asus firmware couldn't last 60 seconds before i got disconnected, and then required a physical off/on to get into the admin console again.

now on merlin firmware and looking good after loading torrent for 5 minutes...going to connect Miotv box later if stable.

just switched to Merlin's latest as well. seems stable for torrents, but the wifi definitely slower (less consistent) than Asus Stock 3.0.0.4.374.205. (My 5ghz LAN transfers dropped from 27-29MB/sec to about 19-20MB/sec), speedtest on 2.4ghz on iphone from maxing out at 45mbps to around 19-25mbps

Is there a more recent firmware other than the 3.0.0.4.374.205?
