Hope some network experts here can advise.

Is my speedtest result ok for M1 100Mbps fiber ?

Wireless connection

Currently using Asus RT-N56U router with DWA-140 as my adapter. Please advise if any upgrade is necessary in order to optimize my speed further.

Your usb adapter should be your bottle neck.
Another issue, may be interferences from the wireless near your house. (Eg. neigbours)
Connect direct to the router, and do a speed test and compare.

100 meg plans are being phased out gradually as the plans expire.
Upgrade to 200 meg when you can.

are you blocked by 2-3 walls from N56U? If yes, I don't think moving to 5GHz will have a huge improvement.
else you can consider wireless N 5GHz 300mbps adapters
imho 60mbps is not bad for 2.4ghz 300mbps wifi

Actually I have no more contract with M1 and thinking of renewing to its 200mbps or moving to VQ 300mbps sitex promo, and a upgrade to AC router and adapter . Not sure if the performance between the 2 is significant enough for me to make the switch though

y don't you move to the new VQ 100mbps plan then?

Think if I switch to VQ, will most likely take the 300mbps plan instead of 100mbps, with AC66 top up. The only consideration is the extra cost for installation and registration which I would have save if I stay on with M1 , not to mention the 200mbps is also cheaper by almost 1/2

after waiting for close to 3 months and calling last week to **** them up really bad, m1 finally called to schedule a black ont installation appointment.

even though they say they are going to make use of port 2, there will be downtime from 12am onwards ...

what's wrong with Port 2? My original installation date was also postponed. Waited for more than a month then they came down to change to black ONT. Used the Port 2.

Not sure is it my Port 1 cui, or the White RG cui. But I just feel that the switch to Port 2/Black ONT has been very worth it. About 25MB/s for download speeds with the 200mbps plan now. Previously only got only about 11MB/s with the WhiteONT+White RG setup on the 100mbps plan.

the purpose of using port 2 is to minimise downtime... so the intention is kind of lost if the downtime is so long.

mine is re-contract from white ont to black ont so different situation from you.

when i first re-contracted, the m1 shop got give me an appointment date. but then a few days later received an sms from m1 say appointment cancel cos opennet capacity issue and told me to wait.

for new sign up the process should be relatively smooth...

Yes.

White ONT has the word "Nucleus Connect" (NC) which means you are using Starhub's subsidiary network. Hence, M1 will charge you $2.10 monthly rental for that since it is not in their business interest to stick with NC as they have become an Op-Co itself.

What it means is that while both ONT are technically capable to handle 1Gbps plan as Starhub and M1 do have such extreme plan, M1 will not subscribe more lines with NC and hence you can only stick to your plan if you choose not to move on with M1's black ONT.

The advantage to move to use M1's black ONT is that when sh!t happens, you can safely blame M1 or OpenNet aka Singtel as chances are will be a 2 way tai-chi party. But if you stick to White ONT, then NC, M1 and OpenNet will play tai chi and you will be in the losing end.

However, the disadvantage is that a change of ONT will involve port 2 as if you jump ship from Singtel to M1 as an example. Then, OpenNet may screw you deeply as the capacity issue is a real pain in the back. Hope after OpenNet's appeal the IDA's $750k fine (If ever) will become $7.5 million instead of giving the screwed up attitude.

IDA fines OpenNet $750,000 for failing to comply with service obligations and standards


Recommendation: If you are going to stay with M1 for long, move on to M1's black ONT despite potential inconvenience and the monthly fee could be a pain in the back.

However, if you plan to switch to MyRepublic or Starhub after end of contract, then don't move to Black ONT liao.

white ONT max speed only 100mbps and if want digital voice will need to rent RG.

black ONT no max speed limit and no need RG for digital voice.

Nope, no setup of router.

router very easy to setup...

just connect cable from modem to router... use the installation disc or browser point to router ip (usually http://192.168.1.1) then can setup liao.

if u still unsure, i can setup for you for a fee.

Usually they won't setup for u
If u want they will ask u pay a fee they will setup for u

for the white ONT what are the things we need to give them back?

m1 will bring new patch fibre cable, LAN cable, and ac adapter for the black ONT or use back old ones from my current white ONT?
