Hi,

I am going to get a new rig soon and have all my parts selected already.

Last burning question is:

should I get Win7 Home Premium 64-bit or Win 8/8.1?

Anything I should watch out for/take note?

Any advice will be welcome!

if you have no issue with trying out new OS

then go for win 8.1.

i myself am using 8.1 here.

Win 7 if you game (and want to milk the last frame out of your GPU).

Win 8 if you desire faster startup, touch support, etc.

For the average user, no compelling reason to choose Win 7.

Thanks for the replies!

I have tried win 8.1 before and I didn't really like the interface.

But that was during a testing phase and I didn't have the luxury of customising the interface like I would if it was my personal PC.

I am more concerned about support from Microsoft. Heard that the new DirectX is not available for win7 yet, and have no idea if they are going to support it. I am aware of win7 home premium ram limitations but that's not an issue for me.

Personally I am more biased towards win7 but I want to hear what advice experts can give first.

What do you use the OS for?

For general use either works fine.
I'm on Win 8.1. No problem at all. Boot-up so much faster than Win 7.

You just need to get used to Win 8 interface. Now 8.1 has the start button..

Win 7 launched in 2009 so mainstream support period for that OS is starting to shrink. E.g drivers update will start to lag with updates or stop completely in the near future.

Thus I recommend 8.1.

Note: Security updates support is 10 years though... so Win 7 can be still secured up late 2019 to early 2020.

Going by the Windows' 1 good, 1 bad release cycle, I'm personally sticking with Windows 7 for now.

Rumours are swirling that Windows 9 will be released in early 2015. Why not get a cheap Windows 7 OEM version for ~$40 (search on HWZ marketplace) first to last till then? I'm not sure how much the Windows 8 variant will cost.

1 thing to take note is that if you have are re-using any old parts, ensure that they are compatible with Windows 8.

Agreed.
If you have USB 3.0 devices and want full performance, don't go windows 8/8.1.
If you want full gaming 11.1dx experience, go windows 8/8.1.
If you have very little usb 3.0 devices and don't mind slow performance and want fastboot. Go windows 8/8.1
If you like the feel of normal windows you are so used to, Choose windows 8.1 or 7.
If you want free OS, Linux!

I tried to accept win8.1 on my laptop but is causing too much agony for me in terms of compatibility, interface and hardware.

In the end I have to try so hard to get win7 to work on my laptop since the vendor don't readily provide all the drivers n software.
