Buying from 7 - 11 or Coles or Woolsworth have the benefits of choosing how much recharge you want to purchase and sometimes you do get bonus credits too :)

From Melbourne airport website.

Optus is located in T2 Arrivals, ground level.

Opening Hours

06:30am - 2:00pm / 06:00pm - 10.30pm - Closed between 2pm & 6pm.

Optus : Melbourne Airport

Looks like we cannot buy Optus sim card at Woolsworth.

Optus cuts ties with Woolworths Mobile | ZDNet

I'll be travelling down to Melbourne at the end of February next year, hopefully can buy the Optus $2 sim card at the Melbourne Airport as my flight reaches Melbourne at night.

Just got back from melbourne, the opening hours stated on the website is not accurate.
Cos when we reach airport at 7am, the staff is in the store but its not open.

Asked him, he told me to wait 15mins. I waited until 7.45am!
Btw, they do not sell optus $2 recharge at the airport. Only sell other types, not sure why.
U may want to try the outlet in the city, at elizabeth street.

Do not buy at 7-11, as they will not activate the card for u.

To clarify all the doubts,

For the blank prepaid SIM card, the price is AUD$2 and can be brought from Optus Store, Woolsworth, 7 11 , Coles, LGA, Newsstand, Harvey Norman JB HiFI etc.

With the blank prepaid, you will still need to get a recharge voucher which works like our local "top up card", the denomination are $10$20$30$40$50$70$100

If you get directly from the Optus Store, the staff will be able to activate the card for you on their system. But if you buy from other places, calling 133 and the staff on the phone can also activate for you. The advantage of buying from other places are that the activation can be done 24 hours and at anywhere just by putting the sim card into the phone and you are ready to call in to activate.

The opening hours at Melbourne Airport have been change to 0730h. The store at Melbourne Airport don sell the blank $2 card but rather the package at 29.95 with $30 recharge inside. Those whom need lesser denomination, would be preferred to go buy from other places. For more info on the Sim card avaliable, https://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile#sims

The $2 plan are deducted everyday at 0000 AEST Sydney timing.

ONLY PAY $2 A DAY FOR:
Standard Talk to any Australian network: UNLIMITED
Standard Text and MMS to Australian mobiles: UNLIMITED
Voicemail retrievals: UNLIMITED
Data : 500MB per Day

The $2 usage fee is charged on the first outbound standard national call, text, MMS, Voicemail or data use each day. Some phones are set to seek data automatically, and this will cause the $2 daily usage fee to be charged. Please check your phone settings.

Data: ordinarily counted in 1MB increments, but access via yes internet access point (APN) is counted in 1kB increments. Check your phone’s user guide for details on changing your APN. If you use more than 500MB, we will automatically deduct another $2 and bump you up to a max of 1GB of data for the day.

Coverage: With 4G devices, you are able to access our entire 3G Network and 4G (1800MHz) Network. With 4G Plus devices, you can access all areas of the Optus Network, including our 3G, 4G and 4G Plus (2300MHz) Networks. For detailed coverage maps, see optus.com.au/coverage

Compatibility: If you bring your own phone, make sure it's not locked to other networks and is compatible with our 4G LTE 1800MHz, 4G Plus TD-LTE 2300MHz and/or 3G UMTS 900MHz and 2100MHz networks. To learn more, visit optus.com.au/compatibility

expire card

Hi,

what happen if it is expired? Can I re-charge it again to activate? Going in 30 Jan 2014.

Just back from Australia. Have 2 Optus $2 per day card (micro sim) for sale. Each have credit of AUD 3.65 left. PM me your contacts to deal at sembawang mrt. Have to top up credit before 16th Nov 2013, else card will expire.

Drove from adelaide - melbourne. Connection is very good for most of the trip. Even covered most of kangaroo island except for Flinders chase (furthest point on island) where there's limited connection there.

The card would be active for 6 months (this is the typical duration but may change from operator to operator) from date of last recharge. The value would be gone within a short duration (e.g. 2 weeks or even less). When the value expires, the card has $0 value but can still receive calls. Simply recharge to re-activate it.

Is there a data sim card available there? Don't need talk time, just for using google, whatsapp, etc. Thanks!

so if I need the prepaid card for data usage only i.e. the 500MB a day, I just need to pay $2 a day?

And I have to buy the card outside MEL airport (since the airport only sells the package)?

Previously I used Amaysim.
Bought SIM card $2 and top-up $10 credit. Used $9.90 of the credit to purchase 1GB 'data pack'. So I did not have enough credit balance to make any calls or SMS.

But for 5-7 day trip, I think Optus '$2 days' plan is most versatile. Allows calls, SMS and data for that small amount of $.

I'm sure you will be walking around Hay Street Mall...
There are 2 Optus World stores within 100m of each other there.

go to [https://www.optus.com.au/shop/stores] and enter 'east perth' in the search box

Use the data to call via Line or Viber or something like that...
No international call credits with $2 plan.

option 2: Purchase one of those calling cards. Use the free local calls to call the local access number, enter PIN, etc etc.

Thanks alot. Saw there is a Woolsworth @ hay Street.

As i will be arriving Perth @ ard 9pm. Guess i will miss that store until next day.

:p

Woolworths may open late but I think the service counter (which sells the SIM cards) may not. Anyway arrival at 9pm, just have a good rest instead :) Surely the phone connection can wait ;)
