imo any ISP which is running a business would try to game the results once they know the specific servers samknows uses or even try to use or setup their own speed test servers. in.

Ida is contracting Sam knows to run its speed tests, why isn't Ida ensuring that test results are reliable and reflect real world achievable speeds

Dear SamKnows,

I posted a similar question on a different thread, but perhaps this is good place to ask as well.

I have a Singtel 200mbps fibre plan

The Samknows/IDA broadband report show Singtel fibre plan achieving ~190mbps for US download speeds.

I can get ~110mbps for US speedtest on Singtel's US speedtest server, which is fine for me if I can actually get these speeds on a real world website. But pretty useless if Singtel's server is the only server on which I can get US international speed in this ballpark.

For any 3rd party US server (i.e. non Singtel) I try, I am not able to get anything remotely close to these speeds, regardless of whichever US speedtest server or file transfers I try - maximum non-Singtel US speedtest results I am getting ~30mbps. I called Singtel technical support, and they tell me that the realistic speed I should be expecting to the US is ~25mbps!

So my question - What are the Samknows/IDA results based on? Are these "real world" speeds to real websites, or tests against Singtel/ISP provided servers ? Are the ISPs gaming these results?

You are not alone. I asked ST why only their server I am able to get ~ 190 Mbps in a single thread and not other server. ST: "Sir, it is because speed test.net servers are not for fibre broadband speed test use so the servers are cap at lower speed. As you know, internet speed will actually depend on the web server speed, how good is your line connection, how the routing to the web server (controlled by the site and not isp), distant and all your hardware quality." I asked: "Is ST sure it is accurate?" ST: "Yes, we are sure it is accurate."

I am able to get ~140Mbps if I do speed test using a few IE. Task manager, performance, show my speed.

IDA should answer this question.

LOL, 6 tests to get 145mbps.

according to samknows downstream throughput is measured with 3 concurrent downloads over http.

we all know about ST's transparent http proxy.

This page shows the megabits per second (Mbps) average speed of your connection when performing three concurrent downloads over HTTP. This should be indicative of the maximum speed your broadband connection will be able to download data from the Internet. Results are recorded in Mbps (higher is better).

Can try downloading from yahoo game to see how is the speed.

Most of the time I am overseas and using overseas office internet so no point and handphone BB.

Precisely, as your home connection is idle,
It will provide opportunity for more tests to be conducted.

You can then back up your claims with your samknows report card

Actually I do not need back up and ST know what I am saying is true. ST has changed my ONT on Sunday morning and everything is fine now. Look like my family no longer need to keep power cycling the two devices any more and I also updated ST that the issue resolved.

So it seems DynDns is no longer offering free services. The reports are now at a new location:

Beta Samknows Reports Summary - Beta Samknows Reports Summary

I might move it to my own domain soon, in case noip decides to ALSO stop offering free domains.

Would you like to take up the offer I made some time back about using a *.opensourcehub.com domain?

How is samknows.opensourcehub.com (provided SamKnows is fine to allow us to do so, otherwise an alternative to avoid infringement of copyright/trademark)?

That sounds good actually. We can discuss further over PM on how to get it to work :)
