Hi guys, my house set up is this:

from opennet wall device to nucleus connect device. (given by starhub)

from nucleus connect connect to dlink router. (given by starhub)

When my laptop connect directly to this dlink router, my download speed goes well over 200mbps. Impressive!

but my room is at the upper floor, so I ran a cat 6 cable all the way to the upper floor. So

dlink router connect to apple airport extreme located at the upper floor.

this is where the problem lies. When my laptop is connected to the apple airport extreme, the download speed always stays around 80~90mbps.

Is there anything wrong with the way I connect the cables? Or is this normal? Or is there any setting I should do on the apple airport extreme so as to get max speed?

I've the same setup (except my main router is Asus AC66U) and connection speed is similar whether connecting to main router or airport extreme.

Do note that:
1. airport extreme prior to early'07 (i.e. gen1 and gen2) is not gigabit ready.
2. There's no other setting (in AE) except Network->Router Mode:->Off (Bridge Mode)
3. It's likely due to the cable or connection, try reseating the cables.
4. Once I had a faulty cable and speeds drop to slightly less than 100mbps (as 100mbps only needs 2 of the 4 pairs of twisted wire in the lan cable).
5. All else fail, suggest you reverse the Dlink and AE to test if AE is faulty. If the result is consistent, AE @ 200mbps and Dlink @ 100 mbps or less, the cat6 cable might be the problem.

TS, which generation of AEBS you using??

When you mention "connect directly to dlink router", are you referring to wired or wifi??

Do not that wifi will not be able to achieve as high a speed compared to wired connection.

AFAIK, AEBS are gigabit ready from gen 2 onwards.

1) Would advise to check cable's integrity 1st, make sure that it's working properly. (Had encountered this before and speed stuck at 100Mbps)

2) Might wanna share your AEBS settings here so that peeps can have a clearer idea.

Hi, mine is the airport extreme, 2013. Bridge mode. I also starting to highly suspect the integrity of the cable.

And when I achieved the 200mbps speed through directly connecting the dlink router, it is through wireless!

anyway I'm at the office now, when I get home, I will screenshot my setting and paste here for better idea.

I am also having somewhat similar issues.

I am on SingTel's 500 mbps plan, using the supplied Aztech 7002 modem with wifi disabled. Instead, I connected an Apple Time Capsule (latest model i.e. it has the ac wifi) to my LAN using an ethernet connection in bridge mode.

My house is fully wired up (Cat 6 cables) and hence all the LAN points get connected to the Aztech modem via a HP managed switch (gigabit speed). My wired LAN infrastructure is therefore gigabit capable.

I tested the Time Capsule's wifi using speedtest.net on my MacBook Pro retina (latest model i.e. it has the ac wifi) and the download and upload speed maxes out at 90+ mbps. When I connect my MacBook Pro via a LAN point in my study, I can get download and upload speeds in excess of 500 mbps using the same test on speedtest.net.

When I checked my switch, I note that the LAN port where my Time Capsule is connected is only on 100 mbps speed and not on gigabit speed.

Strange that the Time Capsule is connecting with the switch at 100 mbps speed instead of gigabit.

Hence, I suspect the following:-
(1) the LAN cable I am using for the Time Capsule is faulty; or
(2) the LAN point I have plugged the Time Capsule in is somehow faulty.

You can confirm this by just plugging a comp using the same point & cable.

If AEBS is running at 100Mbps, try to check if there's option to force it to go 1000Mbps then.

My AC AEBS can run >100Mbps using some cheap flat can cable (30m length!)

Best to check what's wrong with the connection as I'm positive that TC is capable to connect at gigabit speed.

As for TC's (AC model) wifi, had done speedtest and able to achieve about 170+Mbps on iPad Air and iPhone 5S. ;)

Also best to use 2 different SSID to broadcast 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz signal as I've tested that combining both broadcast as a single SSID will result in very bad speed fluctuation. ;)

Yeah, finally got it resolved. The cable was the culprit and fortunately not the LAN point.

The Time Capsule is now connecting with my switch at gigabit speed.

Tested the wifi on my MacBook and getting 226 Mbps download and 419 Mbps upload.

I self throttled my wifi for a while! :s13:

Just a normal cat 5e LAN cable. No particular brand as it was some spare lying around at home.

However, if you are going to run a cable, use a cat 6 LAN cable. Don't think brand really matters that much as long as the quality is not crappy.

How do you set that up on your Time Capsule?

How do you set that up on your Time Capsule?

By default, once you've enable "5Ghz network name" under "Wireless options", it'll self generate a separate SSID with a prefix of "5Ghz" at the end(e.g YourSSID 5Ghz) but some peeps chose to "combine" both broadcast under a single SSID by deleting the 5Ghz prefix so that they/their family don't have to switch between the 2 SSID...:D

LOL it turns out my cat 6 cable is the problem as well.

Tried connecting via my current cable and 50mbps tops, and tried connecting via cable given together with the Apple Airport Extreme and it exceeds 200mbps.

Have asked one of the recommended electrician here to run a higher quality cat 6 cable for my house
