Hi guys im really confused about owning a car. I just got my license a month ago. My gross salary is $2960/mth. Army regular, male 24yrs old this year. Looking for a normal reliable ride for home to work. No gf so no plans to get married anytime soon. My expenses are roughly 500 a month.

I need advice on the steps to go about getting a car. like which bank to look for, which insurance company and which car would likely fit my income.

Appreciate your helps thanks in advance.

I know the feelings of wanting to own a car. Many of the comments against ownership of car here are true. Ownership of a car defies traditional investing logic- depreciating asset, fixed monthly expenses (petrol, road tax, insurance, servicing, parking), etc.

So, despite knowing such hard truths and you want to go ahead, consider the following
a 2nd hand car (reliable ones include Mazda, Mitsubishi Lancer) from sgcarmart, etc.
aged > 7 or 8 yr old,
low mileage,
Only 1 previous owner,
High OMV,
Mthly depreciation abt $500,
Full payment if possible (Not sure on car loans),
3rd party insurance from Direct Asia (keeps insurance costs down on an old car: in case you bang into other peoples's big and fancy cars, their cars will be paid for but yours will not.)
Test drive the car. (Best to go with a Lao Jiao who can immediately sense any faults in steering, gears, engines, etc. Do remember the 'coffee money' dealers charge.)

Once you buy a 2nd hand car, send the car for a thorough reserving so that you know exactly what faults are present. Best not to save this money since 2nd hand cars run higher risk of becoming a 'lemon' and you want a diagnosis of your "new, old car".

A car brings so much comfort.
No more sighting of ugly/ bizarre behaviour in mrt/trains (pushing, shoving, fighting over reserved seats, talking to ownself, etc)
No more packed like sardines, smelling each others' wet and hairy pits. :s22:
No more trapped in mrt breakdowns.
No more waiting in queues desperately dialling for a cab.
No more sweat when booking out.
Your superiors/colleagues are more likely to treat you better if they dont drive and you give them free rides.

In short, while a car sucks you high and dry, you are in control of your transportation. Try it out for 1-2 years and see how.:)

Firstly, how much savings do you have to afford that downpayment?
The more downpayment, the lesser your balance and less shiong on your monthly money sucking.

Think twice about it. And like what many said, is there a huge need for a car, especially when you are single. Other than commuting to work, do you go out very often etc?

My advice is, make sure you are comfortable with the amount you have to spend monthly when buying a car.
To be honest, it’s not about buying a car and paying for it monthly, there’s more to it. Road tax, maintenance/servicing, insurance etc.
Especially servicing, it can get really crazy sometimes…

Think twice or if not thrice dude. I have a friend who bought a Honda fit and barely afford it. He almost died and in the end, can’t even afford to pay season parking and road tax, in the end, he left his car at the carpark and not drive because he didn’t renew the insurance and road tax. Ultimately, he sold his car at a very cheap cost.

Please don’t follow this bad footsteps.

I think ride bike not necessary accident but due to all the accidents nowadays we cant blame people starting to stereotype. Bike is just more prone to accidents and higher risk of serious injuries compared to car but is so much more accessible and cheaper compared to a car. It boils down to one person needs I would say.

Yes, you are right about it.
All riders will have at least 1 road accident, just serious or minor only.

Personally, I stopped riding with 0 accident.

Stats failed.

Lol....walk, jog, run, cycle, taking bus/cab, driving all may meet an accident, just like a biker.

So does it mean, you will leave house and stay at home which it not 100% any will not meet an accident at home?

Just have a heart and feel for others, think before talking so as not to curse individual/group of people in a forum thou.

to die in a bike accident is not the cruel of all things, to not die and remain in wheelchair for the rest of life, to remain in a vegetable state is the most cruel of all.
