Hi guys,
Have been thinking of making a suit for the past year, but before i actually go ahead to make a suit, i would like to tailor some shirts and pants first.
Is there anywhere i can go to read up on suits, shirts and pants tailoring. Would like to at least go to the tailor with some knowledge, instead of being clueless.

Tailored once last time with no clue on what i am doing at all, shirt turned out not as intended. :(

Thanks in advance!

You can try and glean info from this thread, or visit this suiting thread, which was set up to help focus the conversation a little. A lot of good folks have chipped in to make it relevant to most locals.

Nope, visited the store 3 weeks ago. Did a suit at 130USD, 1st fitting done. pending collection (need to find time travel to HCM). but I do not expect much from the suit, given its price.

And they do not carry 100% cotton shirt fabric, only polyester.

One of their top tailors should be Dung Tailor. Can give it a shot if you have the time.

Where do you guys go to do your shirts/pants using your own fabrics? What are the CMT charges for shirts and pants? Appreciate any recommendations.

I'm trying to figure out which places do CMT and whether purchasing fabrics from Acorn is going to be cheaper overall..

Thanks!

CMT charges, locally, generally range from 70 to the upper-most threshold of 120. Some might be lesser, others, more. Vanda Fine Clothing charges the most, at >300-350 for CMT, but their handwork is magnificent.

You generally pay more, the more frills you want for your shirts (MOP buttons might involve additional costs, hand-shanked buttons, yet more $, etc).

If you can get a tailor who accept CMT for 70-80, you're likely to get more bang for your buck, quality-wise, because a shirt made of comparable fabric will go for >180 SGD locally.

My shirts from Crown tailor came in the mail today. Although the shirts look good and the material feels nice, the fitting is poor. There is almost no room at my armpit, which means the only position that's comfortable is when my hands are by my side.

Just raising my hands up 90 degrees and it will become very tight at the armpit area.

Probably cos it's my first time with Crown, so the measurements are poor. I wouldn't recommend anyone to try their first tailoring with a tailor that isn't local. Gonna send some pictures back to them and see if they will do anything for me.

If Crown wants to uphold their standards, they could rectify it at no cost. Any tailors who try to give you excuses for not being able to change it are probably not worth your consideration down the road.

Crown sucks. I used them on the behest of a friend - he wanted to get a package deal and I got two shirts to help he defray costs. Sucked big time. I don't even wear them.

Makes my image of you abit less godlike and normal (it's meant to be a positive comment by the way) to know that you've had such experiences too. :D

Although as you clearly stated, I am sure it was an action largely taken with the objective of helping a friend.

Took some pictures to highlight the problem I'm facing with the Crown tailor shirts. Please share your comments. Sorry for the poor lighting, it was the best I could do.

Basically, it's so tight that creases form when I raise my hand to chest level, and the last 2 pictures are the upper limits of how far I can raise my hands up. Don't even talk about raising both hands up at the same time...

Armhole is too tight/small. If you are altering ask them to make it bigger.

Not too sure if its possible though.

The armholes were clearly poorly measured and constructed. Looking at how it bunches up above the shoulder, I don't think they can expand the armhole without making a brand new shirt. There usually isn't much allowance for shirts and that looks like you need an additional 1-2 inches at least for your arm to be comfortable around the armpit area.

I would ask for a full refund. If that's not possible, tell them you can return your shirts to them provided they cover shipping and they make the brand new shirts for you.
