I believe Ubuntu is compatible with most laptops. There's no particular hardware requirement. Even Pentium 4s can run Ubuntu. So just get whatever laptop you want then overwrite the windows installation or dual boot Ubuntu.

make sure your motherboard etc is supported by Ubuntu. Some times you cannot find compatible drivers then you will lose features such as sound output etc.

Use anything except Ubuntu.

Ubuntu split the graphics stack into 2 incompatible branches by introducing the Mir display server when the planned migration path for the stack was from X --> Wayland. Graphics drivers and input drivers for Mir are not compatible with Wayland drivers.

If you need more proof that nobody wants to support Mir, Intel has rejected Mir. Same for the Mesa stack. And the underlying toolkits that provide the display environment (namely GTK and Qt) have rejected all Mir patches. Ubuntu is on their own

That means that an application that uses standard GTK or Qt toolkits on Wayland will not run on Ubuntu's Mir and vice versa. Ubuntu has to patch everything themselves to get the same level of functionality. This means that Ubuntu's X, Xserver, GTK, Qt, graphics drivers and whatnot need to be heavilly patched by themselves. Which also means that they will always be playing catchup to the latest shipping versions of X, Mesa, GTK, Qt, etc etc.

Finally, only Ubuntu wants to use Mir. Every other distribution have committed to Wayland. No prizes for guessing which stack will be favoured by application, software and device driver developers.

hello, anyone know where to buy laptop that can install ubuntu? Thanks!

See Ubuntu Desktop certified hardware.

I run Linux Mint 17, a nice Ubuntu 14.04 derivative, on my old Dell XPS 12" and Samsung N150+ netbook. Works fine on both, although 14.04 has some problems with some Broadcom wifi chipsets including the one in my Samsung. Still works, just needs extra steps to re-enable wifi after waking up from hibernation.
