Actually I prefer the sound quality of a pair of active speakers paired with a decent DAC over a TOTL CIEM rig.

For example, a few of my friends use Adam Artist 5 with a DAC, and the sound quality easily exceed many flagship CIEMs.
Of course, your mileage depends on your lifestyle.
If you spend a lot of time outside, a CIEM + DAP setup makes a lot more sense.

My personal preference is always speakers though, coz CIEMs or headphones can never replicate the sound that surrounds me.
